Working in Early Years, it’s not just child’s play!
Early years and childcare is an important career, as those who work in it play an incredibly valuable role in shaping the lives of future generations, it is a career you can be proud of.
Working in a day nursery you can look after children 0-5 years old, all day, having responsibility for their care and early education. If you work in a pre school or playgroup, you offer early education in sessions, working with children 2-5 years old. As a childminder you can look after children of any age in your own home, being self employed and your own boss. Finally you may opt to work in playwork at an out of school club or a holiday scheme.
There is a raft of qualifications you can study for from NVQ level 1 and 2 qualifications, through to degrees. By 2015 every childcare setting must be led by a graduate so there are great opportunities to study and progress in this sector if you so choose.
North Yorkshire County Council offer advice and support to those wishing to join the sector. The Children’s Information Service provides a helpline which you can contact to receive a detailed information pack about working in early years. In addition you can visit the website, register for our jobs matching service, or speak to one of our workforce team for more tailored advice and guidance.
