Harrogate Crime Writing Festival

ASPIRING crime writers are to be given the chance of a lifetime when they meet some ‘dragons’ of the literary world.

As part of the Theakstons Old Peculiar Crime Writing Festival in July, anyone attending the Creative Thursday workshop will be invited to brave the ‘Dragon’s Pen’.

Once in front of the ‘dragons’ - a panel of industry professionals who have given a kickstart to many authors’ careers - fledgling writers will have two minutes to present their crime novel before waiting for the feedback.

On the panel will be Jane Gregory of Gregory and Company, Philip Patterson of Marjac Scripts, Selina Walker from Transworld and David Shelley from Little, Brown.

Run in partnership with Leeds Met University, Creative Thursday is now in its fourth year and offers a unique day of workshops and seminars with leading crime writers and experts in the field of crime.

This year, workshops will include Writing Legalese, which looks at how to communicate the law and order point of view, and is presented by crime author and Lawyer of the Year 2007, Martin Edwards.

Real CSI – Turning the Facts into Fiction takes a long look at how to create an effective and realistic investigation in a novel without drowning in facts and procedure, with author Laura Wilson and CSI officer Andy Manns.

And back by popular demand, author Zoë Sharp will be giving a hilarious self-defence class while looking at how you can translate violence onto the page.

The Theakstons Old Peculiar Crime Writing Festival runs at the Crown Hotel from Thursday to Sunday, July 23 to 26. To book, call 01423 562 303.
