Village Hall - It’s hard to believe that after all of the years of planning and fund raising in the village, we now have our fabulous new village hall situated in a commanding position, overlooking the playing field and the cricket square.
Last week, the construction team took away all of the cabins and safety fencing and it is now possible to see the new building in its completed state.
There are a few more jobs to be undertaken but to all intents and purposes, it is finished.
As mentioned in the last article, there is to be an opening event tomorrow morning Saturday, April 24, when all villagers will be made most welcome and be able to have a coffee and some cake, and to take a look around the building.
Villagers should have received a personal invitation and we would love to see as many faces as possible on the day!
Ceilidh - On Saturday, May 1, we will be holding an evening ceilidh, with dancing to a live band and there will be a bar open and food is provided within the ticket price of £10. Tickets are still available from the usual vendors.
It promises to be a memorable event and if you get too hot dancing, take a break on the decked veranda and enjoy the fabulous elevated view of the countryside to the north!
Open Gardens - Planning is in an advanced stage for the Open Garden event on Sunday, June 20, and I am sure that villagers will, as in previous years, thoroughly enjoy this event when we can display the charms of our little piece of Yorkshire to outsiders, as well as to other villagers.
The Bay Horse - It will not have escaped the notice of most villagers that our pub has in recent months been undergoing something of a refurbishment under the new stewardship of Stella, Mike, and Tom. It has been painted inside and out, a new bar, some comfy seating and some other internal changes. Although hopefully not needed for very much longer, they have also fitted some new wood burning stoves, which will certainly be welcome next winter!
They have a new and interesting wine list and have some guest ales too. The current guest ale is Green King’s St Edmunds which is a golden refreshing ale with a citrus finish. Well worth trying. The food menu is very tempting and very reasonably priced and on Fridays they now have fresh large beer battered cod fillets on the menu.
Quiz - The pub hosts a weekly quiz night every Wednesday with a 9.30pm start. Entry is £1 per person with complimentary chips and nibbles for each team. Prize is a bottle of wine to the winning team. There is an additional competition with bonus questions for the jack-pot, presently standing at a whopping £200!
Race Night - On Friday, April 30, there is a charity Race Night in aid of the children’s charity, Wish House. Buy your horses now! Special prices will apply on the night with guest ale at £2.50 a pint and house wine at £6.95 a bottle.
Music Evening - Another event that should appeal to many villagers will be an evening of music on Friday, May 14, when “Sounds Like Us” will be playing all your favourites. In case you do not recognise the name, it is Morv and Janet, who have been very active in the area for a long time now and have probably been responsible for causing more people to have an interest in guitar music than Eric Clapton!
The Land Girls - Tickets are still available for the production of ‘The Land Girls of Yorkshire’ by the Badapple Theatre Company on Saturday, June 12 at
7.30pm. Contact Kate on 01423 339168.

Badapple Theatre - On Friday, June 12, almost 100 villagers, friends and family made for a fantastically successful evening at the Green Hammerton Primary School Hall, where the production of “The Land Girls of Yorkshire” was enjoyed by all.
The play written by Kate Bramley, and performed by Badapple Theatre, was an absolute masterpiece, and all who watched the performance were enthralled by the acting and the sets.
The ice creams during the interval went down a treat as well.
For those who missed the play, Badapple Theatre will be touring around the area so keep a sharp look out and make sure that you catch it next time!
We raised the magnificent sum of £857 from the event for which we must extend our gratitude to Kate and the Badapple Theatre Company for their time and generosity.
Hog Roast and Auction - The following weekend was the Village Hog Roast and Auction of Promises, taking place on the Village Green.
The weather on Saturday did not bode well for this outdoor event and much of the afternoon was spent labouring in the rain, erecting gazebos and sourcing larger marquees, to offer some protection from the elements. Thanks are due in particular to Sam Blacker and Bob Clements for lending at short notice and helping to erect their equipment, which was very much appreciated, and also to all the other volunteers.
Fortunately, by late afternoon, the weather had lifted a little and we were blessed with a dry evening and the gazebo village was not needed but looked great anyway.
The Green Hammerton Village Charity has been the Ainsty Farm Shop’s chosen charity of the year and we have benefited tremendously from the generosity of Stuart Beaton and his staff.
The hog roast was provided by the Ainsty Farm Shop and was simply wonderful, and typically, up to the high standard expected of produce from the Farm Shop. The pork and all the trimmings were enjoyed by all, and in copious amounts!
Once all the food had been eaten, or at least all that possibly could be eaten, it was time for the auction. As in previous years, villagers and local businesses had been persuaded and cajoled into proving goods and services, ranging from a six month supply of home made ginger biscuits, baby sitting duties, through kitchen appliances, to luxury week end breaks.
Russ Piper had gamely offered to step up to the microphone and undertake the task of auctioneer, and he performed supremely in a role that he had not had any previous experience of. He managed to drive up prices, keep the action moving and dealt humorously with some of the more highly spirited bidders.
After totting up all the bids, it appears that we have managed to raise a further £3,250. A superb effort over two weekends and great fun to boot!
All we are waiting for now is the outcome of our recent funding applications and if those are positive, it should be all systems go for the new Village Hall on the playing field. Fingers crossed, everybody!
Quiz - Finally, just some advanced notice of our next event which will be an ever-popular general knowledge quiz and supper, on the evening of Saturday, September 26.
Tickets will be £5 per person. More details nearer the time. |

Treasure Hunt - Although the run of recent good weather had broken and the skies looked rather foreboding, we were most fortunate that the threatened rain held off for the Village Treasure Hunt held on Sunday, May 4.
There was a good turn out and little groups of participants were seen tearing around the village searching for clues and seemingly having great fun.
Congratulations to the winners of the treasure hunt: the team comprising of Jake and Luke Temple, Ellie and Evan Hines and William Hollaway. Well done also to the fastest team, comprising of Alexandra and Clementine Amsden.
Theatre - Our next GHRC event is to be a production by the Badapple Theatre Co Ltd, entitled “Back to the Land Girls”, a new comedy by Kate Bramley inspired by war-time reminiscences of local Land Army girls - some girls just aren’t cut out for farming!
The performance will be held at the Green Hammerton Village school on Friday, June 12 at 8pm. Tickets are £10 and are available from Carole Rutter, Sue Holden and Chris Turner. There will be an intermission with complimentary ice creams. Just like the old days!
This is going to be a very enjoyable and popular event, so be sure to order your tickets soon.
Auction of Promises - A timely note to remind everyone that the Annual Promise Auction and Hog Roast is to take place on the Green on Saturday, June 20. Tickets are available now from all the usual vendors.
We also require volunteers to propose suitable promises or unusual and alternative items for auction. Remember that this event is to raise funds for the new building in the playing field and we will all benefit from that development.
Whilst referring to the new building development, we are now waiting for the results of two recent funding applications and once they are in, we would hope to be in a position to make some exciting announcements. Watch this space.

NOW that all of the excitement and excesses of Christmas and New Year have died down, the various groups within the village are busy making plans for future events.
It is our aim to have fun whilst we raise funds for the numerous good causes that require our constant attention.
Church News - The village church, St Thomas’s, has recently been successful in obtaining a Grade 2 Listing and the Fabric Committee are busy applying to various bodies for assistance in covering the not insignificant expenditure required to refurbish the stonework of the building.
Excellent progress has been made in this exercise and it is hoped that little additional fund raising will be necessary. Congratulations to all concerned!
Recreation Charity - The Recreation Charity still have an ongoing commitment to raise funds simply to maintain the playing field, the playground and the Reading Room.
In addition to that obligation, we also have the plan to develop a new building on the playing field, to serve as a pavilion and changing rooms and also as a replacement for the Reading Room, which is beginning to show its age.
Events - The first event of the year is to be a light hearted music quiz on Saturday, January 31 at 7.30pm in the Reading Room. Tickets are £5 per person, available from the usual village vendors, and include a glass of mulled wine and a hot supper.
A new event this year is to be an evening of wine tasting, with guidance from a well known local wine critic, sampling a range of good quality South African wines and supplemented with a range of cheeses and nibbles. This is to be a relaxed evening and no orders or sales will be involved. The event will be on Friday, March 20. Tickets are going to be £7.50 and further details will be published nearer the time.
Later in the year, we will be having a Meet and Eat event and in the summer there will be our village barbeque and auction of promises, which is always fabulous fun and enjoyed by all.
Further details on these events, in due course.
