Sicklinghall - Lou Graham 01937 583383:
St Peter’s Church: The Antiques Road Show held on Friday, September 25 in Sicklinghall Village Hall was a great success. Over eighty people gathered to listen to two experts from Hartley’s of Ilkley relate the history and value of their treasured antiques. The amount raised was over £645. The Church committee was delighted and would like to thank all who supported this event.
Harvest Festival: St Peter’s glowed this Sunday with the warm Autumn flower arrangements and the colourful baskets of vegetables displayed through out the church for the annual Harvest Festival. As well as singing the popular Harvest hymns, the congregation enjoyed listening to the children of Sicklinghall School sing their version of the Lord’s Prayer, Calypso style. Everyone was then invited down to the village hall for a sumptuous Harvest Lunch of cold salmon and ham, accompanied by a variety of salads. Home made apple pie and ice cream followed. This was also the occasion when the Friends of St Peter’s thanked Ernest and Rose Westerman for 50 years of service to the church, which included singing in the choir as well as undertaking other duties. Rose and Ernest were invited to cut a cake, especially made for this celebration and appropriately decorated with two model choristers. They were also presented with a book on the Yorkshire Dales and a beautiful orchid. Everyone was grateful to be able to have this chance to thank them for all their dedication to St Pete’s over the years and to wish them well.
Sicklinghall Cricket Club: Sicklinghall Cricket Club invite everyone to an evening of Halloween Horror in Sicklinghall Village Hall on Saturday, October 24 from 7.30pm till late. The entertainment follows a ghostly theme with dancing to ghoulish classics such as The Time Warp and Monster Mash, as well as Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Try your hand at “Shooting the Dead” – armed with five scary balls, you have to hit various graveyard demons and bloodsuckers to stop them from taking over the village! Curry and nibbles will be served throughout the evening. Try the hot one, known locally as “The Burning Fires of Hell!” A punch of blood curdling delight will be served, not in a bowl, but a cauldron! The Witch’s Brew will leave you spell bound! There will be a pumpkin carving competition for the best scary face and also a prize for the best fancy dress, although this is optional. If you would like to join the Cricket Club for a frightfully good time, tickets cost £10 and are available from John Wood (01937 587191) or Martin Wood (07894 400024).

Sicklinghall Field Day: Another reminder that Sicklinghall’s annual Field Day is on Monday, August 31 from 2pm onwards. This is the main fund raising event for maintaining the village hall in such excellent condition and so bringing credit to the local community. The village hall is totally self financing – it does not receive any grants or subsidies and therefore relies very much on the community using the hall for social events and clubs, as well as donations from fund raising events such as Field Day. Field Day 2008 was a great success, hopefully this year, with everyone’s continued effort and generosity, a “Fun Day” will be enjoyed by everyone.
Attractions will include the Stanley Newmarket Colliery band, traditional side shows and stalls, a bouncy castle for the children, teas served in the hall and a popular home produce and cake stall. There will also be a giant tombola and raffle. Other events for the children include a fancy dress parade, which has two classes – under eight years of age and over eight years of age. This will be judged at 2.30pm. All visitors of school age can enter a painting and drawing competition – entrants can choose their subject. The children’s races are always popular and begin at 4.15pm. The photographic competition for the J Fryer Rose Bowl is open to all residents of any age and the theme is “Summer Holidays”. Entries can be left with Mrs Angela Marlow at the Old Post Office or handed in at the hall by 11am on Field Day. For the energetic there is a cross country run which will start at 5pm. The less energetic can enjoy a more leisurely barbecue and bar in the grounds of the village hall, which will draw the whole day to a conclusion at around 6.30pm.
How can you help? Please help by coming along with your family and lots of friends and especially encourage any newcomers to the village to participate. Buy lots of raffle tickets and ask for more books to sell to friends and colleagues at work! Perhaps volunteer to work on a stall or side show. Offer to bake cakes and jam for the refreshment counter and the home produce and cake stall. Please donate big exciting prizes for the tombola. Give some really worthwhile items to the bric-a-brac and book stall, but please no jumble. Perhaps make a cash donation if you can’t attend. All these will help enormously to make a successful Field Day and will be greatly appreciated by the members of the committee. For any more information about this event, please contact Suzann Phillips (01937 585622).

Sicklinghall’s ‘Amazing Golfing Association’: The popular association, made up of gentleman who live within the parish, met at the world famous Alwoodley Golf Club for it’s 5th annual golf day on Monday, June 8th.
The weather was kind and the course, in superb condition, proved a challenging test of golf for all 16 participants; playing off full handicap, a Stableford competition, in teams of four, only two to count, few completed the round without losing one or more balls but all enjoyed the fellowship and the encouragement from the more competent players.
Joined by those few who were unable to play this year, we met at our local, the popular Scotts Arms, and sat down to a superb menu devised by our helpful host, Ted, and served by his friendly staff. Prizes were purchased from the pubs well stocked Farm Shop and presented to the winning team of Utrich Alexander, Neville Balmer, Chris Kirby and Tim Mansi. Other prizes were awarded for nearest the pin on various holes. The majority of members walked home!!
Next year’s event will take place on Monday, June 14 2010 and a warm invitation is extended to any gentleman, new to the village or new to the sport, to join our amazing association.
Contacts for more information: Utrich Alexander on 01937 586278 or Laurence Thomas on 01937 581634.

Sicklinghall - Lou Graham 01937 583383:
Sicklinghall Playgroup: The playgroup are delighted that they have been awarded funding from North Yorkshire County Council to refurbish their outdoor play area. This will involve erecting fencing around the area to make it more secure. A playhouse will be the main feature, with window boxes so that the children can grow flowers from seed. Hopefully work on this will start at the beginning of April, just in time for the children to enjoy the summer playing outside.
The children are celebrating the end of a busy term with an Easter Egg Hunt this Friday.
St Peter’s Church: Two fund raising events are being planned for the summer, when hopefully the weather will be a lot warmer. Here is an opportunity to put the dates in your diary as the church will be grateful for your support.
There will be a Coffee Morning at Jean and Gordon Tennant’s home, Rock House, Back Lane on Saturday, May 16 from 10.30am to 12.30pm. The entrance fee of £2.50 will include a hot drink and a biscuit. There will also be a cake and produce stall and a raffle and of course a chance to wander around the garden. Parking can be difficult, so please leave cars on Main Street and walk round.
Mary Clarke is inviting people to enjoy her garden at Thornthwaite, Main Street, on some weekends and some Wednesdays, from noon till 4pm during the Summer. Picnics, dogs on leads and children are all welcome. Entrance fee will be £2.50 to include a hot drink and a cookie. Children will be free. These openings may vary, depending on the weather, so please look out for notice boards at the gates or phone 01937 584577 to check if open. This could form part of one of the popular walks around Sicklinghall. Contributions of home made biscuits, flapjack, shortbread etc will be most welcome (not cakes or scones) to keep in the freezer until needed.
Sicklinghall Friends: Just a reminder that the Annual Review meeting for the Sicklinghall Friends will be held in the village hall on Wednesday, April 8 at 7.30pm.

The story is set in Nazi Germany in 1939 and is centred around the character of Liesel, a nine year old girl, whose parents have been taken away to a concentration camp. If this book appeals, then you are welcome to join the group for a discussion on Tuesday, May 19 at 8.30pm in the Scott’s Arms.

Sicklinghall CP School: The school will be holding their annual Daffodil Tea on Wednesday, March 25 at 2.30pm. This is always a popular event with the children, as they have the opportunity to hunt for half of a missing picture, hidden somewhere in the school grounds. When they have found the matching half, they are then given an Easter egg. Everyone wins an egg, as the older children help the younger ones to find their picture. The pre-school children are not left out either; they are given baskets to hunt for mini eggs hidden in a pile of straw. Details of other stalls and activities will be included nearer the time.
Sicklinghall Friends A reminder that the Sicklinghall Friends will be meeting for afternoon tea at Nidd Hall on Wednesday, March 11. The arrangements are for everyone to meet at the Hall for 2pm and afternoon tea will then be served at 3pm.

Lent Lunches: The first Lent Lunch for the Benefice of Lower Wharfedale will be held in Sicklinghall Village Hall on Wednesday, March 4 at 1pm. These will take on the same format as last year, when home-made soup and bread will be served, followed by coffee or tea. The Lent discussion will begin at 3pm. The topic this year is the Lord’s Prayer, which can easily be taken for granted. The discussions will “unpack” the Lord’s Prayer and reflect on its use and meaning. On a more practical note, the organisers of these meetings would be grateful if those attending brought their own bowl and spoon, but don’t worry, there will be some spare if you forget! Dates and venues for the remaining three Lent Lunches are as follows: Thursday, March 12 - 1pm St Barnabas, Weeton; Thursday, March 19 - 1pm St Barnabas, Weeton and Wednesday, March 25 - 1pm All Saint’s School, Kirkby Overblow.
Sicklinghall Parish Council: The first draft of a 20mph scheme outside the school has been seen and approved. Although there has been some reluctance to have speed bumps on the edge of the edge of the village, the parish council have been advised that this is the best way to cut speeding vehicles.
The “Little Red Bus,” that has been running in the mornings and afternoons to bring the children to and from school, has had to stop. The bus company has been unable to get the necessary funding to continue this run.
The next parish council meeting will be held in the village hall on Thursday, March 12 at 7.30pm.Sicklinghall Friends: Just a reminder that there is an outing to Nidd Hall for afternoon tea, on Wednesday, March 11. Please ring Judy Grundy 01937 582792 for further details.

Sicklinghall - Lou Graham 01937 583383
Sicklinghall CP School: The school has now recovered from the Christmas flurry of activities last term and the children are now settled down to work on the various topics for this term. The popular subject of chocolate forms the basis of a geography and science topic both for the Y5/6 class and the R/Y1 class, whilst the Year 2/3/4’s are enjoying a topic on Australia.
This week the older children are looking forward to a visit to Harlow Carr for a science workshop and the whole school will be involved in a skipping workshop. The school continues to offer a range of after school activities. This term the children have the choice of football, athletics or rugby, as well as a lunchtime craft club.
The children look forward to “Dazzle Time” every half term, when all the staff offer an extra curriculum type workshop for the children to enjoy. These can range from jewellery making, gardening, nature walks, cookery, fondant icing modelling to a drama session. The whole school is involved and this special treat provides a suitable reward to the children for working hard throughout the half term.
As well as working hard, the children are involved in fund raising for the children in the Gambia. By holding an “Odd Sock” Day, they hope to raise enough money to sponsor a child in an Infant School in Gambia. This event will be organized by the School Council, a group of children elected by their peers to represent their class at school council meetings, when ideas for improving the school are discussed with the Head Teacher.
The PTFA are holding a cake and book stall in school on Friday, February 6 at 3.15pm. All are welcome, plus any cakes and old books that you would like to sell.
Sicklinghall Playgroup: Both the school and playgroup joined together on the last morning of the Christmas term, when R/Y1 class visited the play group to sing carols and enjoy each others company over a drink and a biscuit. This was such a success, that a future meeting is planned for the end of this term as well.
Nursery Rhymes provide the theme for this half term’s topic for the playgroup. The children are planning to have a morning when they will dress up as their favourite Nursery Rhyme character.
Sicklinghall Friends: A reminder that the February meeting for the Sicklinghall Friends will take the form of a musical afternoon at 2pm in Margaret Allen’s house – Mountain Ash Barn, Sicklinghall. Everyone is invited to bring along their favourite music, either on tape or CD.
Sicklinghall Parish Council: A plea for volunteers to help clear the weeds in High Flush Pond. If anyone is able to help, could they please contact Carol Warrington (01937 582410).
Sicklinghall Book Club: Members of the book club were unanimous in their enjoyment of the recent book club read – Black Diamonds by Catherine Bailey. Perhaps this was because the book had a local appeal, as it was set in the coal industry region of Yorkshire and told the personal story of a Yorkshire aristocratic family – the Fitzwilliams at Wentworth House. Everyone’s fascination and horror at the working and living conditions of the Yorkshire miners in the early 1900’s promoted a lengthy discussion of the book. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, March 17at 8.30pm in the Scott’s Arms when the book for discussion will be a detective story “Terracotta Dog” by Andrea Camillen.

Sicklinghall - Lou Graham 01937 583383:
Sicklinghall Friends:
The last meeting of the Sicklinghall Friends was in October, when Ann Copp talked about her experiences as a voluntary aid worker in Southern India with Aid Camps International in partnership with SCAD (Social Change and Development). The aim of the organization was to provide a block of therapy rooms for boarding schools to be used by children affected by physical and intellectual disabilities, many of whom have been rescued from child labour. Ann’s job as a short term volunteer was to prepare the buildings by lime-washing and painting. This work was done in the morning and in the afternoon she visited various schools, gypsy camps, a leprosy village and the salt pans, where many of the families worked, including young children.
Ann managed to raise £500 through sponsorship for this worthy cause. Everyone was fascinated by her talk and full of admiration for her hard work and that of the other dedicated group of volunteers.
The December meeting of the Friends was Christmas Dinner at the Scott’s Arms, which proved to be a popular event on which to finish the year’s programme.
There will be no January meeting, as the first meeting for 2009 will be a Musical Afternoon at Margaret Allen’s home, Mountain Ash Barn, Sicklinghall at 2pm. For more details of this event please contact Mrs Judy Grundy (01937 582792).
Sicklinghall Parish Council:
A plea from Sicklinghall Parish Council requesting that visitors to the cemetery, park their cars on the main street, rather than by the cemetery itself, as they block entrances to the bridle path, the field and the garage opposite. Thank you for your cooperation.
Another plea is to keep using the post office! We are very lucky to have this facility, which is open every Friday afternoon in the Scott’s Arms.

Sicklinghall CP School: The village hall was filled to capacity on both Wednesday, December 10 and Thursday, December 11 to watch the school’s annual Christmas production. This year’s “Nativity” had an “X Factor” theme, with three judges looking for a Star. They were entertained by a variety of wonderful acts including “The Diablo Dudes,” who did amazing tricks with a Diablo and a Hoola Hooping Trio, who twisted and turned their bodies, as well as throwing hoops skilfully across the stage. Everyone sang all the catchy songs with enthusiasm and the audience joined in some of the more familiar tunes. Even with all this amazing talent, one judge was still not satisfied, believing there to be a special Star out there, which they had missed. He was right, the real Star was eventually spotted over a stable and everyone bowed down and offered gifts to the real Star of the show – Baby Jesus. The children and staff were rewarded for all their hard work by an appreciative audiences and also gifts of bouquets were presented by the governors and PTFA to all the staff as a thank you, not only for the Christmas Play, but for all their hard work throughout the year.
Christmas Celebrations in Sicklinghall: On Sunday, December 21 the congregation of the two churches in Sicklinghall – St Peter’s Church and the Church of Mary Immaculate – joined together to celebrate Christmas with readings from the bible and the singing of carols. Everyone met at 3.30pm at a festive St Peter’s Church, seasonally decorated with holly, candles and Christmas tree, where the Rev Stuart Lewis enthusiastically welcomed everyone to this historic occasion and lead the first part of the service. At 4pm with carol sheets firmly clasped in hands, the congregation made their way down to the car park next to the convent, where they sang “Away in a Manger” to some of the nuns who were unable to come to the carol service. At this point it was starting to get dark and everyone was grateful to enter the welcoming Church of Mary Immaculate, where they were warmly welcomed by Father Murphy, who finished the service with a special Christmas Blessing. The whole event, which was wonderfully attended by supportive parishioners, concluded with tea and mince pies in the village hall.
Book Club: A reminder that the book club is meeting on Tuesday, January 20 in The Scotts Arms at 8.30pm. The book being read this month is “Black Diamonds” by Catherine Bailey, a record of the rise and fall of the Fitzwilliam family – one of the coal barons of Yorkshire. Perhaps you can use one of your Christmas book tokens to buy a copy and join the group for the discussion!

Sicklinghall Friends: The next meeting of the Sicklinghall Friends will have a festive theme, as Tricia Staynes and Anne Hopper will demonstrate the art of Christmas Cracker making. This skill has been passed down through the family, as Tricia’s mother used to make boxes of crackers which were sold in major department stores. As well as making personalized crackers for the family at Christmas, they are also an impressive way to present a gift to friends. The demonstration will take place in Sicklinghall Village Hall this Wednesday, 12th November at 2pm.

Sicklinghall - Lou Graham 01937 583383:
Harvest Festival: The bright Autumn sunlight shone through the windows of St Peter’s Church last Sunday, highlighting the beautiful floral arrangements and harvest produce on display. Families and friends gathered to give thanks for the yearly harvest and to present their own harvest gift for others less fortunate than themselves. The children from Sicklinghall School also contributed to the service with their singing of Harvest songs. Harvest celebrations continued after the service with a lunch in the village hall. A buffet lunch was provided by the friends of the church and everyone was invited to try a piece of the parish pie, made from the first apples produced by a recently planted tree in the church garden. Although the pie was cut into small pieces for all to try, there wasn’t quite enough for everyone, so some of the apples were included in a fruit salad! Both tasted delicious and were appreciated by everyone.
Friends of Alfie Martin: The quiz night held in the village hall last Saturday was a great success, raising over £1,500 for Special Care Baby Transportation and Intensive Care facilities. The hall was decked with patriotic bunting and flags; tables were covered in the Financial Times and adorned with red flowers and sauce bottles. The room was buzzing as teams battled with tortuous questions such as “which is the most popular fruit throughout the world?” Who would have guessed “tomatoes?” Sustenance arrived halfway through the evening in the shape of a polystyrene tray containing fish and chips, complete with bread and butter. The only thing missing was a cup of tea! Our quiz host and markers worked hard throughout the evening and at the end of the night awarded the winning team with a bottle of champagne. Thanks to the organizers for such an enjoyable evening.
The Rioja n Roll Evening: Held in the village hall was also very successful with over sixty people joining in the fun. “Beyond Ugly” enticed everyone onto the dance floor and the organizers were delighted that they were able to raise £760 for the Alzheimer’s Society and the Yorkshire Cancer Centre.

Sicklinghall - Lou Graham 01937 583383:
Sicklinghall Field Day: Sicklinghall’s annual Field Day is on Monday, August 25 from 2pm onwards. This is the main fund raising event for maintaining the village hall in such excellent condition and so bringing credit to the local community. The village hall is totally self financing, it does not receive any grants or subsidies and therefore relies very much on the community using the hall for social events and clubs, as well as donations from fund raising events such as Field Day. Field Day 2007 was a great success, raising a much needed £1,720. Hopefully this year, with everyone’s continued effort and generosity, this sum will be beaten and a “Fun Day” will be enjoyed by everyone.
Attractions will include the Stanley Newmarket Colliery band, traditional side shows and stalls, a bouncy castle for the children, teas served in the hall and a popular home produce and cake stall. There will also be a giant tombola and raffle. Other events for the children include a fancy dress parade, which has two classes – under 8 years of age and over 8 years of age. This will be judged at 2.30pm. All visitors of school age can enter a painting and drawing competition – entrants can choose their subject. The children’s races are always popular and begin at 4.15pm. The photographic competition for the J. Fryer Rose Bowl is open to all residents of any age and the theme is ‘Yorkshire’.
Give some really worthwhile items to the bric a brac and book stall, but please no jumble. Perhaps make a cash donation if you can’t attend. All these will help enormously to make a successful Field Day and will be greatly appreciated by the members of the committee. For any more information about this event, please contact Suzann Phillips (01937 585622).

St Peter’s Church Sicklinghall: The Flower Festival held last weekend at St Peter’s church was a wonderful community event with everyone helping in many different ways. The church was a riot of colour as every window ledge and surface was adorned with a flower display to represent a jewel from the Bible. Golden roses decorated the altar, silver lilies the font and colourful summer flowers cascaded from a high window like a waterfall. All who attended the Friday night preview enjoyed a glass of wine, delicious canapés, the company of friends and neighbours, as well as a chance to have a closer look at the flowers. Despite the drizzle, many visited the village hall on Saturday to enjoy a cream tea and admire the craft stalls. As usual the cake stall was popular and some of the children took part in the village trail competition and had their face painted. The weekend culminated in a Songs of Praise service in the church on Sunday afternoon, when hymns were sung accompanied by “The Collingham Band” and the children from Sicklinghall CP School performed songs from their recent “Pop Connections” CD. The Friends of St Peter’s Church would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way to the success of the weekend. The event managed to raise just over £1,100 which will be a great help towards the maintenance of this special church.
SAGA (Sicklinghall’s Amazing Golf Association): The amazing association’s 4th annual village golf day was held on Monday afternoon, June 9 at Headingley golf club in blazing sunshine. Headingley is a very stiff course, acknowledged as the oldest in the Leeds area. Sixteen seniors and two juniors from Sicklinghall and Kearby were not daunted by this challenge and completed the 18 hole Stableford. Everyone met up again at the Scott’s Arms in the evening for an excellent dinner and afterwards prizes were presented to the successful players. All prizes were bought at the pub’s own farm shop.
Next year’s event has been pencilled in for Monday, June 8 2009 and a warm invitataion is extended to any gentlemen new to the village or new to the sport, to join this amazing association. Neville Balmer, who has helped to launch and run the village golf day for the past four years is now handing over this responsibility to Utrich Alexander. He is grateful to Peter Owthwaite’s help in guiding him through the complex mysteries of golfing rules and is now looking forward to enjoying 2009’s event totally free from personal stress. Anyone wishing to join this amazing association should contact Peter Owthwaite, 01937 584344 or Utrich Alexander 01937 586278.
Sicklinghall Friends: The Sicklinghall Friends had a very enjoyable summer outing to Helmsley on Wednesday, June 11. This proved to be such a popular event that a mini bus was booked to take its 16 members to this pretty North Yorkshire market town. Although this was a return trip for many, a few had not visited Helmsley before and appreciated having the opportunity to explore its individual shops and gardens.
The next event on the Friends’ programme is a talk about the Caribbean, accompanied by slides. These are usually of a very high standard and all are invited to attend. This will be held in the village hall on Wednesday, July 9 at 7.30pm.
Sicklinghall Cricket Club: The First XI will be playing at home against Oulton on Saturday, June 28, whilst the Second XI are playing away against Leeds Police.

For St George’s day, the boys had their faces painted with the England flag and made flags using red and white material. They have also been taught about the importance of recycling and after spending a week collecting cardboard and plastic, they walked to the recycling centre at the Scott’s Arms to “post” their items.
The cub group (age 8-10) has been meeting irregularly due to lack of leaders. However leaders from other groups have helped since Easter, to ensure that the group continues to meet.

The Mayor outlined the role of his office and allowed the children to try on his Mayoral robes and chain. After experiencing sitting in the Mayor’s special chair, the children enjoyed a glass of orange and a biscuit before returning to school.
By popular request the school held a Beetle Drive in the village hall on Friday, April 25. This game, which appeals to all ages, always draws a crowd and the sound of shaking dice and shouts of “Beetle”, echoed throughout the hall. Half way through the evening, a supper of pizza and salad was served by the PTFA. At the end of the evening the committee was given a warm vote of thanks for providing such an entertaining fund raising event and then prizes were awarded to the winners and losers of the game.
Northern Spirit Singers: On Saturday, May 3, the congregation of All Saints Church, Kirkby Overblow, were entertained by a talented group of young people called the Northern Spirit Singers, who were all connected with Durham University, either as former or present students. Sicklinghall - Lou Graham 01937 583383:
The Village Hall: The curry evening held at the village hall on Saturday, April 26 was a great success with over sixty people enjoying delicious Indian food supplied by Spice 4U together with live entertainment.
The evening began at 7.30pm with a glass of wine, followed by the arrival of a large variety of delicious curries, rice, samosas and poppadums. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity of chatting with friends and neighbours, as well as dancing to the sounds of the sixties from the The Classic Duo. The evening not only proved to be great fun but also raised welcome funds towards the upkeep of the village hall.
The village hall is used on a regular basis by a wide range of groups throughout the year. The Playgroup has been running for many years and meets in the hall every morning. The recently formed Cubs and Beavers club meet every Thursday evening and a sewing group gathers every Monday afternoon. Yoga is another popular class and takes place on Monday evenings and Friday afternoons. In addition the village hall is available to rent for children’s parties, family socials and weddings.
The main fund raising event for the village hall takes place on August Bank Holiday Monday, when everyone gathers for the popular Field Day. At this event music is provided by a local band and there are stalls, competitions and cream teas. The village hall plays an important part in the life of our village and everyone is keen to support it in many different and imaginative ways.
Sicklinghall School: The children enjoyed various fund raising events for Water Aid at the end of the spring term. They held a Pyjama Day in school, when everyone, including the teachers, came dressed in bedtime attire. During the afternoon a Wellie Disco took place in the school hall for all the classes. Wearing wellies didn’t seem to restrict the style of the dancers as they enjoyed moving to the latest sounds!
The older children have been invited to the Mayor’s chambers in Harrogate to meet the Mayor and learn about his role in local government.
The year 6 children have also had their annual visit to Crucial Crew. Here they take part in various ‘make believe’ situations which are organized by local agencies to help them react to a possible real life problem and find solutions, which may actually be life saving.
The younger children visited the Sculpture Park in Wakefield and on their return to school have been inspired to produce some very exciting art work.
Choral Concert: Members of the Parish have been invited to attend a concert at All Saints Church Kirkby Overblow. This will be held at 7.30pm on Saturday, May 3 when the audience will be entertained by The Northern Spirit Singers. This group of singers has played all over the UK as well as performing with Lesley Garrett. Tickets, in aid of the church are £6 and there will be wine and soft drinks available by donation.

Murder Mystery: The Murder Mystery Dinner held at the Scotts Arms on Friday, February 8 was a great success. Over thirty people attended the evening, which began with a cocktail in the bar and was then followed by a three course meal. The landlord himself was finally discovered to be the “murderer” and was duly “arrested” by a member of staff. Even some of the regulars at the pub were asked to give evidence and became involved in the drama. The idea came from the floor manager of the pub, Nina Prescott, who is a member of a drama group in Leeds called Marie Art. The popularity of evening has prompted her to write her own Murder Mystery, which will form the basis for another evening event in April.
The Scotts will be offering their usual Sunday menu for Mother’s Day and have a varied array of hampers for sale with a Mothers Day theme.
The barn shop continues to offer locally sourced and organic food for sale. This is conveniently open during pub hours and is ideal for any forgotten item of shopping or a gourmet gift.
Sicklinghall Friends: The Sicklinghall Friends held their first meeting since the break up of the Yorkshire Country Womens’ Association in December. Sadly the membership for this club had declined but it was agreed that the members would like to continue to meet on a more informal basis. After the meeting of the new club in February, everyone felt very positive about its future. Subsequently a varied programme of events is planned. This includes some visits to local places of interest and meetings attended by guest speakers.
Mothering Sunday: The Family Communion for Mothering Sunday will be held at St Peter’s Church at 9.30am

Sicklinghall C P School: The Ladies Pamper Evening, held in school on Friday, February 1 was a great success. Thanks to the organizing committee, the evening ran smoothly with everyone enjoyed a relaxing, social event. The hard work was richly rewarded with the PTFA managing to raise over £800. Definitely an event to repeat in the future!
Another fun way to raise money for charity is to use the fact that this year is a leap year. To celebrate, the children will be taking part in a non uniform day. They will have to give a donation to be able to dress up as something that leaps! This could be anything from a hare to a grasshopper.
Africa is the theme for this term’s work in school. Through art work, the class rooms have been transformed into an African jungle, with colourful masks adorning the walls and a replica of mud hut forming the venue for tribal meetings. As part of this theme, the children’s attention has been particularly drawn to the importance of water in the life of an African village. With this in mind they also intend to raise funds for Water Aid later in the term. A visit to a Water Treatment Works near Goole has also been planned for the children in KS2.
The whole school will participate in an African Drumming Day, which will involve the children taking part in various exciting drumming workshops throughout the day. Perhaps it might be best to give school a wide berth on that particular day!
St Peter’s Church: During the period of Lent, a series of four lunches will be held in Sicklinghall Village Hall on Wednesdays, February 13, 20, 27 and Wednesday, March 5 at 1pm. This will be a simple meal of soup and bread, followed by a discussion. The theme for these discussions is “Wrestling with God” and will have a different focus for each of the four weeks. Everyone is welcome to attend and requested to bring a bowl and spoon! In addition to the Lent discussion group, there will also be a midweek Communion Service at 9.30am. These will be held in the Parish churches of North Rigton, Kirkby Overblow and Sicklinghall on the Wednesdays of the Lent lunches.
Sicklinghall Parish Council: The chairman of the parish council, Carol Warrington and residents of Sicklinghall would like to thank Hedley Saville and the working party of men from the village, who cleared all the rubbish that Alan Proudfoot had removed from the pond. They did a wonderful job, the pond area is now looking in pristine order.
There is still a problem with dog fouling in the village. This is a particular problem to Sephton Baxter, who has agreed to take on the grass cutting in the village. He has made a special request that owners clear up after their dogs to avoid his strimmer re-distributing the….well you know - I’ll leave it to your imagination!

Sicklinghall Playgroup: The children at the playgroup enjoyed many exciting activities during the lead up to Christmas, including a visit from Santa and a party on the last day of term. A popular event with the parents is always the Nativity Play, which brought its moments of anxiety, when Mary thought she had lost baby Jesus. Luckily Angel Gabriel came to the rescue and was given the thumbs up sign from Mary when Jesus was safely delivered into her arms.
The theme for this half of the term is Shapes, Colours and Numbers. People Who Help Us, will be the focus for the second half and this will include a visit from the Police and Fire Brigade. There will also be a visit from the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, which is always popular with the children as they bring a dog for the children to meet.
The Playgroup meets in the Village Hall, Monday to Friday, 9.15am – 12-15am. If you would like further information, please contact Emma (Tel 07900 992314).
Yorkshire Country Women’s Association: It was agreed at the last meeting that the Sicklinghall branch of the YCA should break their connection with this association and become the Sicklinghall Friends. Sicklinghall CP School: The village hall was filled to capacity on both Wednesday, December 12 and Thursday, December 13 to watch the school’s annual Christmas production. A Modern Day Miracle was a nativity with a difference. Written by the staff, this lively musical was set in Bethlehem airport. A bright star had interfered with traffic control and brought flights to a stand still. Groups of tourists, shepherds and rock star kings were all bizarrely brought together to witness the birth of a special baby. The children sang the appealing songs with enthusiasm and the audience enjoyed the topical humour of the script.
A more traditional occasion was the Christingle service in St Peter’s Church, when the children, parents and friends gathered to hear the origin of the Christingle service and to worship the Birth of Christ with carols, readings and prayers. This was followed by tea and mince pies back in school. It also provided an opportunity for the school and parents to say goodbye and thank you to the school secretary, Mrs Jill Blackman, who has been such a mainstay in the office for seventeen years and will be greatly missed.
The PTFA issued large blue bin bags to families at the end of term. These are to be filled with any unwanted clothes. This should provide an ideal incentive to clear out your wardrobe for a fresh start to the New Year. These bags are due for collection on Wednesday, January 23. Proceeds from this project will go towards the purchase of a suspended screen and projector for the school hall.
Parish Council: The parish council would like to inform the residents of Sicklinghall that they have received a message from the Neighbourhood Watch scheme, warning against bogus telephone callers, who are posing as representatives of Marks and Spencer. The caller asks to check personal details of the householder.
A general plea to everyone to use the village Post Office. This is open every Friday afternoon in the Scotts Arms pub. With the recent threat of closure of many Post Offices, we may be required to write letters of support to keep it open.
Book Club: A reminder that the book club is meeting on Tuesday, January 22 in The Scotts Arms at 8pm. The book being read this month is The Memory Keeper’s Daughter. Perhaps you can use one of your Christmas book tokens to buy a copy and join the group for the discussion!

Sicklinghall Village News

Sicklinghall- Lou Graham 01937 583383:
Sicklinghall CP School: The Christmas fair on Saturday, December 1 was well supported and raised over a £1000 towards school funds. As well as a valuable fund raising event, the fair provides an opportunity for friends and past pupils to meet and catch up.
Other events at school included the Christmas concert, which this year was a Nativity set in Bethlehem airport! There will also be a Christingle service for the children, parents and friends of the school in St Peters Church on Thursday, December 20, to which all are warmly invited.
The Scotts Arms: This well known pub is continuing to play an important role in the life of the village. Not only is it open daily for food and beverages, but it now has an impressive farm style shop attached to the premises. This offers a wide variety of essential household items, delicatessen foods and gourmet gifts. A popular section of the shop for children is the sweet stall with its jars of inviting confectionary. The hours conveniently correspond with the opening times of the pub. Further information can be found on the Scotts Arms web site www.scottsarms.com.
Another attraction of the pub is the social groups which meet regularly each month. The first Tuesday of each month is Ladies night, when anyone is invited to catch up with local news, make new friends and enjoy a glass of wine. A similar meeting takes place for the men in the village on the second Tuesday in the month. Finally a book club meets on the third Tuesday of every second month, which gives everyone chance to actually read the chosen book!
Christmas Carol Service: A reminder that the Christmas Carol Service takes place on Sunday, December 16 at 4pm.
