Village Hall - The plant sale and coffee morning recently made a first class total of £680 for village hall funds. Many thanks from the committee for an excellent turnout and support for the hall.

Staveley Stampede is coming up on Sunday, June 20 (Fathers Day) - enter now and enjoy a great day.
Parish Council - The latest Parish Council meeting was held recently and the following items were discussed:- Staveley and Copgrove Recreation Ground. An operating sub committee has been set up and more people are required, preferably those with young children, to join this committee. Please contact pc@staveley-yorks.org.uk if you are interested.

The equipment on the recreation ground is being checked regularly and repaired when necessary.
There have been some complaints from residents living near the village green of children playing on the green rather than the recreation ground. Youngsters have said the football field is often waterlogged and they are right. The Parish Council is now clearing the ditch to help with drainage. Quite a lot of work has been done around the rec - particularly with overgrown shrubs. Many thanks to all involved with this work.

Sewerage and Drainage - Villagers should report any problems with this to Yorkshire Water's call centre on 08451 242424 with as much information and location details (including full post code) as possible.

No Tree-Lined Avenue for Staveley - As Yorkshire Post readers will know, the Parish Council managed to raise £3,200 from Yore Vision's funds for the planting of an avenue of trees at the Knaresborough entrance to Staveley. Unfortunately, the application for a licence to plant the trees was rejected by North Yorkshire County Council and the money which had to be spent by 31 March has been lost.

Spellow Crescent - The Parish Council is in discussion with Harrogate Borough Council about the "grass verge" on Spellow Crescent which was the subject of an enquiry from a resident at a previous meeting and has been a bone of contention for many years. Residents in the crescent and others are concerned about vehicles being parked at the entrance to the village within the 20mph speed restricted area. Spellow Crescent is very narrow and cars parked on the road can block access to others and more importantly emergency vehicles.
Residents are worried that should access be required, would a fire engine or ambulance be able to reach the incident? Spellow Crescent has a wide grass verge and it is outside the conservation area. It has been suggested this verge could be converted for parking so that the road would be left clear for residents and emergency vehicles. The Parish Council is supporting this idea and is talking to Harrogate Borough Council about making this a reality - watch this space!
You can keep up to date with happenings in the village on the website www.staveley-yorks.org.uk where the draft conservation plan prepared by Harrogate Borough Council can also be viewed. Any comments on the plan to HBC by June 28 please.

Parish Council - The next meeting of the Parish Council will be on July 8 in the village hall.
Strawberry Tea on the Green - Tomorrow sees the annual Strawberry Tea on the Green from 3pm to 4.30pm. All are welcome to go along and enjoy delicious strawberries and other refreshments. There will also be a Plant Sale stall with Ken Barker and proceeds will go to All Saints Church, Staveley.

Ecology at work in Staveley churchyard - Churchyard maintenance volunteers enjoyed a slide show and presentation by local ecologist Bernadette Lobo last Saturday when she spoke about the management of a wild flower graveyard and the identification of wild flowers in Staveley.
Bernadette explained how important it is to encourage and create a haven for wild flowers in churchyards as intensive farming methods have destroyed many natural habitats.
It was important for local residents to know that far from being neglected the churchyard was being well managed and was being nurtured as a haven for wild flowers with a current total of 63 species being identified. There is a focus on this type of work throughout the country during a week long event called "Cherishing Churchyards" starting on June 18.
Villagers are encouraged to go along to the churchyard at any time to see the valuable work that has been going on since the programme was introduced last year.

Allotments and Horticultural Society - As many people in the village will be aware, with help from Daniel and Cheryl at the Royal Oak plus assistance from Harrogate Borough Council, there are now 12 allotments in Staveley: nine behind the pub and three on Main Street towards Arkendale Road.
The Parish Council thank Daniel and Cheryl for their support - without it the struggle would still be going on!
The allotments are now growing crops for the residents of Staveley and the pub - fewer food miles and fresher food, can't be bad.
The Parish Council has supported the allotments and has now willingly handed over control to Staveley Horticultural Society under the stewardship of Paul Best (Chair), Malcolm Dibb (Secretary) and Colin Bateman (Treasurer). The horticultural society is open to all (not just allotment holders) and an open inaugural meeting is being held in the village hall on Monday, June 21 at 8pm. All are welcome so please go along and support this new venture.

Staveley School - The children gave a wonderful performance of ‘The Lemonade Kid’ the week before they broke up for the summer holidays. The acting and singing was wonderful, a lot of hard work having been put in by the children and teachers to get the high standard.

Sports Day was another enjoyable event with the usual sprints, egg and spoon, sack race and obstacle race. All the age groups hotly contested all races.

The Ieavers service was a lovely event. Five children have left school this year to go on to secondary education. All were presented with a book of their time at Staveley School and all got a dictionary to hopefully help them with their spelling at senior school.

Staveley and Copgrove Parish Council - The next meeting of the council is being held in the Village Hall on Thursday, August 28 at 7.30pm.

Chris Hales - Chris died recently and will be missed by a lot of people for his commitment to whatever he was doing and also his sense of humour. He will be missed by his widow Eileen and family. Eileen wrote this short tribute to him.

Born and bred a Kentish man, Chris moved to the ‘Frozen North’, as he put it, after a lifetime of globetrotting with the RAF and more latterly the Foreign Office.

He quickly became involved in Copgrove Church as self-appointed head gardener maintaining the church grounds in immaculate condition.

With a fine speaking voice he was often called upon to read the lessons in services.

He served for six years as the Parish Councillor for Copgrove, a spanking new notice board, a handsome bench for weary walkers and a profusion of daffodils diligently planted were amongst his achievements.

In his role as deliverer of the parish magazines and sundry notices, he came to know almost everyone in the village.

Always ready to listen and seldom to criticise, he will be much missed.
