All of the work is funded by the users of the premises, charitable organisations and contribution from Harrogate and County Councils, making this a great facility for local people. A reminder for all you allotment holders and members of Harlow Hill Allotments Association that seed orders for the spring are due in at the end of October. As the days are getting shorter, I think it is always good to think ahead to the new growing season and to the lighter evenings. Guiding
It was wonderful to be able to attend as a guest the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Guiding Movement, which for our area, was held at Harrogate Ladies College. This was an afternoon of fun for girls and leaders of all ages. Thankfully there a hundreds of girls who enjoy being members of the guiding movement and the opportunities this can bring. However, there is a shortage of leaders and this has come close to home at our units held locally at Harlow Hill Methodist Church. The Rainbow unit, which meets on a Wednesday, is now down to only one leader who will be moving out of the area next summer. Unless some more volunteers come forward the unit will be suspended at that time. This is a plea for help – we need new leaders across the sections to support our girls and young women who enjoy guiding so much. If you think you might be able to help, please contact Hilary Pickering on 874360 or you can get in touch directly with me and I will pass on your details. Can you help??

Rossett Acre Primary School
Pantomime Review Jack And The Beanstalk
Once again the magic recipe for successful pantomime was at work with the cast of this year’s Rossett Acre Primary School production of Jack and the Beanstalk, written for the team by Martin Lewis It is always a delight to be invited to come along and review this show and I was certainly not disappointed!
The sense of excitement and anticipation was there as I arrived in the foyer of the school and here I must mention all the hard-working parents and members of the family on front of house duty or backstage who contribute in such a big way to the success of the Rossett Acre production. I was met by a cheerful and friendly team (thank you Sabelle and Sarah) and shown into the hall for the night’s entertainment to begin.
One big change this year was that the stage was in a different place for the first time in the history of the pantomime at Rossett Acre, creating more opportunities for the use of the space available. The sound and lighting team were buzzing about getting things ready and I met the pianist for the show, Jackie Barnes, taking part in her first production and doing a wonderful job throughout the evening!
In the audience the children were already excited – a heady mixture of highly coloured sweets inside them and they were ready for the fun. A large cast of 24 children was taking part in the Thursday night production which I attended – well done to you all for all your enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment for your roles in the show. There was lots of dancing, chorus work and speaking parts, holding up things, removing things – you name it, they were involved in it all and I think this is another reason why everyone enjoyed the performance so much. Another team of 24 shared the performance nights during the week –a big responsibility for the children’s director Joyce Hannam and her team of 8 helpers!
Once the show began, the audience were cast into the land of Jack and the Beanstalk with all the characters that are familiar. From the outset funny man Martin Dickson as Billy, Kath Clayson who played Jack and John Chester as Jack’s mother held everyone with their mix of audience participation, singing and jokes. Buttercup the cow was absolutely delightful – Beth Bell and Freya Dickson manoeuvring the cow costume wonderfully! The arrival of the Giant (Dan Stark) and his apprentice (Andrea Stark) caused some of the younger children to leap to the safety of a parents knee just in case they came to close for comfort. Up in giant land there were the more reassuring and lovable characters of the Goose (David Wheat), the Harp (Val Hall) and the Giant’s daughter (Sue Lewis). Some lovely costumes here from the team. The hilariously made up Nice but Dim giants played by Michelle Hayes and teacher Maxine Watkinson who kept throwing sweets into the audience made them a huge hit with the children! I cannot do a review for this show without mentioning once again the fantastic role that Caretaker Jonathan Gibbons takes – in this show he was Harvey the Woodsman, brought in to chop the beanstalk down towards the end of the show. He loves his character acting and so does everyone else! Claire Wheat as the beautiful Fairy Nuff, Nick Sharp as the bejewelled Landlord and John Firth as the health and safety conscious Beanstalk keeper completed the cast.
All the elements which make pantomime so successful and popular were in this show – the slapstick, the audience song, the birthday, the chase around the hall, the wedding scene at the end – but they were presented in a slightly different way which I found very refreshing as things came in at unexpected times. Director Alison Bell and Producer Andrea Start had obviously done a great deal to ensure that everything came together on the night, to give the audience truly a night to remember. A huge well done is due to the entire cast of Jack and the Beanstalk, for a tremendous week of performances for Rossett Acre Primary School.

Half-term Holiday –
I hope that those of you who did enjoy some holiday time for the children’s half term managed to get a good break. After two whole weeks of battling to work in the snow and ice it is very pleasant now to be seeing the spring flowers coming through and the land recovering from its extended covering of snow. As spring approaches I hope that some of you out there will have more news for me about events in the Harlow area. If you do, please contact me on the number above or on the E mail address.
Parade Service
Last Sunday there was a special Parade Service at Harlow Hill Methodist Church to celebrate Thinking Day which is very much a part of the Guiding calendar. This is a time when the girls from all units are encouraged to think about the rest of the world and the ways in which each individual girl can do something to make her world a better place. It was a delight to have so many of the girls and their parents in Church for the service led by the Rev Mark Godfrey. The Brownies presented some of the work they had been doing about guiding in Mexico and the guides had written some reflective prayers. Birthday greetings were also given to Guider Alison Megginson who celebrates her birthday on Thinking Day.

I was delighted to be contacted by Lynda Dale from Trinity Methodist Church with news about these forthcoming events at the Church.

In the last fortnight meetings of the Harlow Men’s Forum have been led by Mr S Tate on Traveller’s Tales and Mr B Wilkinson with a talk entitled Ex Terra Lucem: the Gas Industry. Just a reminder from the Harlow Hill Allotment Association that rent for allotments for the next year should be paid by the end of this month and this can be done at the allotment shop which is open on both Saturday and Sunday mornings from 10.30-noon. Local residents might like to know that they can become associate members for a very small sum and can take advantage of the allotment shop for most basic garden requirements. There is a waiting list for allotments which are extremely popular at the moment, so if you wish to be added to the list or want to find out more about the Harlow Hill Allotments site, please call into the shop on site on a weekend morning.

I was delighted to see that at RHS Garden Harlow Carr, throughout the week February 14-22 , there will be a celebration of Birds in the Garden with a full week of activities to enjoy. These include quiz trails, bird crafts, making bird feeders, storytelling, bird advice from the RSPB, a visit from the Yorkshire Dales falconry, advice on nest boxes and much much more, with things happening every day throughout the day during the half term period. For more information about this exciting week, either pick up a leaflet from the gardens, telephone on 565418 or look at the gardens website on www.rhs.org.uk/harlowcarr
Rossett Sports Centre
During the half term holiday there will be a variety of activities available once again for our young people. These include themed days on bounce around, pirates, team challenge, art attack and super heroes spectacular. In addition there will be special coaching sessions on trampolining and football during the week. The play sessions are divided into age groups – 5 -7 years and 8 – 12 years. New Year Greeting
Following a Christmas which I spent mostly in the Lake District with poorly parents to look after, it seems good to be returning to a bit of normality and setting about the new year tasks! Happily things back at my old home are much better now. One of my tasks for the New Year is to keep my readers up to date with the happenings on Harlow Hill. To do this I need lots of help from you! Please do get in touch with me if you have any news you would like to include in this column. You can contact me at the telephone number above or on the E mail. I always appreciate receiving details of local events – either regular meetings, occasional special events, special birthdays or anniversaries or greetings of any kind. The more you can contribute, the more everyone on the hill gets to know local news. I look forward to hearing from you.
Carol Singing
Before Christmas an intrepid band of carol singers accompanied by their own excellent band, set forth from Harlow Hill Methodist Church to sing carols around Harlow Hill. This proved to be an excellent evening. The route was varied for the first time to take in house on the Plantations and the group was extremely well received. Thanks to everyone’s generous donations, the carol singing alone raised £260 on the night for the Harrogate Homeless Project. The Christmas Day collection at Harlow Hill was added to this amount to raise the grand total or £350 for the Project – an excellent total and one which was extremely well received. Many thanks are due to all those who came out to listen to the carol singers and who contributed in any way to the success of the evening. For future reference, the carol singing takes place every year and anyone is invited to join in. Keep a look out for details as next Christmas approaches!

New members are welcome to come along to any of the meetings of the Harlow Friendship Club which commence at 2.30pm. For any further information please contact Mrs H Rayner on 734577.

Scout News: The annual Christmas performance was held at Twenden, home of the 20th Harrogate Scout Group, the Lions, last week. This evening involved all the sections and was well supported by parents. The Grand Christmas Raffle was drawn by Coun Andrew Jones and this money goes towards the fundraising efforts for the re-building of the facilities on the current site. So far the money raised this year amounts to £13,000, a magnificent effort. On Sunday, December 21 the Lions will be bag packing in Asda and they would be grateful for your support once again. The 20th Harrogate Scout Group would like to thank everyone who has helped them throughout the year and hopes you will continue to support events in 2009. Meanwhile warmest Christmas wishes to everyone from the Lions!
Christmas Church Services: You are most welcome to come and join any of the following Church services being held over Christmas at Harlow Hill Methodist Church just across from the Co-op on the corner of Otley Road and College Road.
Sunday, December 21 there will be normal 10am worship and in the afternoon at 4pm the traditional Candlelight Carol Service led by the Rev L Wassell. This will take the form of carols, readings, drama and prayers for Christmas with tea and mince pies being served afterwards.
On Christmas Eve there will be a Crib service at the held especially designed for little ones and their parents. This is a very informal service, during which the nativity characters are places in the Crib. There will be plenty of opportunity for joining in with songs, action rhymes and games.
Also on Christmas Eve at 11.15pm there will be a united service of Holy Communion to celebrate the Light of Christ.
On Christmas Day there will be a Family Service at 10am. If you have opened any presents please bring one along to show and tell!

The walk will conclude with delicious Betty’s mulled wine and mince pies in the Study Centre. Places are limited so if you want to join in please give Harlow Carr a call on 724680.
Carol Singing: One of the traditions of Christmas on Harlow Hill has become the annual carol singing evening. This will take place on the evening of Tuesday, December 23. Meet at Harlow Hill for a bring and share meal before setting off for the singing around the houses on Harlow Hill at 7pm. There will be a small band of intrepid musicians leading the singing and this is a chance to have a really good sing to raise money for a very good cause, the Harrogate Homeless Project. If there is a knock on the door between 7-9pm on this evening it will very likely be carol singers. Please come out and listen or join in!
Christmas Greetings: Harlow news will resume again after the holiday period and I would like to thank all those who have taken the time to contribute items for the column. May I take this opportunity once again to wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Scout News
Those of you who attended the Stray Fireworks display last Saturday night may well have managed to find your way to the 20th Harrogate Scout Group (the Lions) stall selling hot dogs, burgers etc. The team were working well when I came along to purchase and it brought back many memories of similar stalls done in the past. The Stray bonfire night provides Scout groups with an opportunity to make funds for themselves and to provide a service for the many people who came along to watch on the night. According to Lions Chair David Odd, the takings were a fair bit down on last year which was a little disappointing. As I reported in my mini column last week, the 20th have a lot of money to raise, if they are to achieve their goal of rebuilding their home on the current site on St Mary’s Walk. The Scout Group next major fund-raiser will be a coffee morning to be held at the Scout hut on Saturday December 6 from 10am-noon.
Men’s Forum
The Harlow Men’s Forum meets each Tuesday morning from 10 am at Harlow Hill Methodist Church. On Tuesday November 11 Mr R Smith presents a talk entitled Pantomime to Pantomime. This is followed on Tuesday November 18 by a talk by Mrs A Henson with the subject Madeira:Garden of the Atlantic. The Harlow Men’s Forum is well attended an always open to new members to come along. For further information contact secretary, George Mountford on 564858 or come along any morning to join members for coffee at 10am.
Friendship Club
The Harlow Friendship Club meets at the Green Hut, the Harlow Community Centre on Harlow Avenue each Wednesday afternoon at 2.30pm. On Wednesday November 12 Sam Parkhouse will give a talk on the work of the RNLI. On Wednesday November 19, Ian Hayden gives a talk on the Yorkshire Moors and Coast. Once again new members are most welcome.
Harlow Carr
Following an extremely busy half term week at Harlow Carr which gave everyone an opportunity to sample a real taste of Autumn, the month of November also has lots going on according to the autumn programme. Last Wednesday November 5 there was a Bringing the Winter Garden Inside workshop. This was a chance to find out which plants to grow in the garden to provide suitable material for indoor winter displays. On Saturday November 8 from 10am-3pm there will be a Tree Party with a day of themed activities for all the family, including walks and talks that focus on trees and their inhabitants, bark rubbing and quiz trails. There will be a Garden Explorers event on Saturday November 22 entitled Potato Puppets and a family Christmas event will take place at the end of the month during the weekend of Saturday and Sunday November 29 and November 30
OASIS
This group for the over 50’s meets at St Mary’s Church Hall, Harlow Terrace on Thursday afternoons at 2.15pm. On Thursday November 13 there will be Members afternoon with the theme Memorable Moments. On Thursday November 20 Miss Margaret Greene takes a Light-hearted look at Christmas and there will also be a Horticap sales table at this event.
Horticap
This year for the first time, Horticap has its own Christmas card. This is from a painting by supporter and artist Les Packham and shows the Horticap garden in winter. It is now on sale in the shop at the Bluecoat Wood Nurseries on Otley Road on the way to Beckwithshaw and costs £3.50 for 10. This product is also available at the charity card stand in Brindleys. All proceeds from the sale of this card go straight back into the work that Horticap does which has to make it worth investing in!

Highlight On Local Scouting And Guiding
Scout News
Many of you will have read in the Advertiser last week the feature on the 20th Harrogate Scout Group’s Channel swim which took place at the Hydro recently. The main fund-raising target at the moment for the 20th Harrogate Scout Group (Lions) situated on St Mary’s Walk, is to raise sufficient funds for a complete re-build of the property. The sponsors for the event were PeopleCo IT Recruitment Specialists. The Harrogate Lions acted as adjudicators for the event and donated a cheque for £3,800 towards the fund. All future fund-raising efforts at the 20th Harrogate Scout Group will be focused on raising the necessary funds needed to give our local Beavers, Cubs and Scouts the best possible centre for carrying on with their activities.
You can support the fund-raising effort by going along to the Stray Bonfire this Saturday night November 1 from 6.30pm onwards when the 20th Harrogate Scout Group will have their traditional stall selling burgers, hotdogs etc. It is estimated that last year the group served over 600 people on the evening so they would really appreciate your support on this night.
I look forward to keeping you updated on developments at Twenden and to featuring news of any fund-raising efforts. Having had a long association with the 20th Harrogate Scout Group I know how much this facility is needed and how much it will be welcomed by all those who lead our local scout groups and by all the children who benefit so much from scouting activities. Thanks very much to Deborah Roslin for getting in touch with me about these events.
Guide News
Locally Rainbows, Brownies and Guides flourish on Harlow Hill. We are fortunate in having a team of leaders who dedicate themselves to providing activities through guiding to the girls and young women of our area. The 4th Harrogate Brownies has not met since the summer holidays, due to leader Fiona Dodd retiring from a job she has done for many years, to commence a nursing course in York. At the last minute a new leader has come forward and will be running the unit with the guidance of District Commissioner Hilary Pickering from the start of November. Hilary tells me that there are lots of girls on the waiting lists for all our local groups and certainly for Brownies there are easily enough girls to start another unit at Harlow Hill Methodist Church. The problem is that there are simply not enough leaders coming forward. At Ashville the Rainbows are also seeking a leader to take on the group and as yet no-one has come forward.
I have been asked by Hilary to put out a bit of an appeal to local people to try and recruit some more leaders for our girls on the hill. Again this is a topic close to my heart, having led myself both Rainbows and Guides at Harlow Hill Methodist Church. You do not need any training to start with just lots of enthusiasm and energy and a real wish to get involved in your local community. If you think you might be interested please give Hilary Pickering a call on 874360 or E mail me on my address as above and I will forward your details to Hilary. Your help is really needed.

Holiday Time: As half-term approaches for our children and all those who work in schools, I am delighted to be able to write about so many things happening locally on the hill that you can become involved in if you are not going away for a break. I can guarantee that there will not be time to be bored, if you take a read below and take advantage of the opportunities available!!
American Exchange: For a party of year 9 students this half-term will be entirely different! The group of 30 students and accompanying staff for Rossett School left for Falmouth, Maine, USA in the early hours of last Saturday morning. There is a long history of pupils exchanging with Falmouth and the party is ensured a very warm welcome from their American hosts with a full programme of trips and activities planned. The American party will return to Rossett at Easter to sample some of the delights of our county.
Autumn at Harlow Carr: There is absolutely masses going on at Harlow Carr gardens over the half term week. At the start of the holiday an Apple Festival will take place with special displays, tastings and advice and identification sessions. During the week there are various competitions and workshops including guess the Weight of the Pumpkin, willow weaving and crazy critters [vegetable animals]. There are also demonstrations on fruit pressing and wood turning. Friday, October 31 will be Pumpkin Day with fancy dress, a cookery demonstration, face painting, pumpkin carving and Halloween crafts and balloon workshops. Sunday 2 November has Mushroom Magic as the theme with displays of fungi, mushroom sculptures, craft activities and games. Throughout the week all activities happen between 10am – 4pm. To find out more, pick up a copy of the Taste of Autumn Leaflet, search the website at www.rhs.org.uk/gardenevents or call 565418 for specific details on anything mentioned above. A fantastic week of activities and children under six get free entry to the garden.
Men’S Forum: Harlow Men’s Forum meet at Harlow Hill Methodist Church each Tuesday morning from 10am when refreshments are served. On Tuesday, October 28 Mr M Langford poses the question Where in the World is This? On Tuesday, November 4 Mr G Queen will give a talk entitled Uphill All the Way. New members are always welcome to join this thriving group, just for men! Please come along to any meeting or contact secretary George Mountford for further details.
Allotment Association: A reminder from Harlow Hill Allotment Association that seed order forms need to be in to the allotment shop by Friday, October 31. What I like about having an allotment is that planning ahead is always happening. As we battle with the wind on the hill and set about digging over for winter, spring is just around the corner as we plan the next growing season. Happily allotment gardening remains extremely popular across the country and the Harlow site is thriving. The next social event on the calendar will be the Annual Bonfire on Wednesday, November 5 starting at 6.30pm. Site members should note that contributions of woody rubbish only can be added to the bonfire from Saturday, November 1, once the location is known!
Friendship Club: This group meets at the Green Hut, Harlow Community Centre on Harlow Avenue each Wednesday afternoon at 2.30pm. On Wednesday, October 29, members welcome Miss Bird with her talk entitled From Russia with Love. On Wednesday, November 5 the AGM will take place and all are welcome.
Horitcap: In September the Bluecoat Wood Nurseries on Otley Road welcomed as their guest His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester. The Duke had a guided tour of the site where he met students, instructors and volunteers. He showed a great interest in all the tasks the students carried out and he planted a red oak tree to commemorate his visit. This is at the start of the wildlife trail which is being created by the students and staff. I went up to visit Horticap two weeks ago on a glorious sunny morning to enjoy the garden and to stock up on some winter bedding plants. What a glorious place to be! If you have never visited this gem of a place, I would certainly recommend a visit. I am always delighted to receive the newsletters brimming full of forthcoming events.
Rossett Sports Centre: Our local sports centre once again offers a play scheme programme over the half-term holiday. This is intended for children aged 4 – 12 years and is split into two sessions, once for 4 – 7 years and one for 8 – 12 years. Each day has a theme – glass painting, bounce about, junk modelling, super sports and Halloween Day. Bookings are for full or half days and don’t forget to bring lunch! To find out full details and to book you place, please contact Rossett Sports Centre on 505455.
Coffee Morning: On Saturday, November 1 there will be a coffee morning and cake stall held from 10am – noon at Harlow Hill Methodist Church. Here you can also find the Harlow Hill Puzzle Club! As the clocks will have changed by this weekend and the colder weather sees people indoors more, why not come along and borrow jigsaws from the library for the sum of just 50p each? These can be exchanged at the regular monthly coffee mornings on the first Saturday of the month, or on any Sunday morning after the 10am service. Plans are also afoot to introduce a mid-week coffee morning at the Church. A date for your diaries on the hill is Saturday, December 6 when a Christmas Bazaar will take place at the Church for the first time in quite a few years. This is to have a Pantomime theme and fancy dress is encouraged! There will be a variety of stalls including those run by the Rainbows, Brownies and Guides. More details to follow!
Oasis: Thanks to Amanda Atkinson for getting in touch with me about the Oasis programme. Oasis is a group for the over-50’s which meets at St Mary’s Church hall on Harlow Terrace each Thursday afternoon at 2.15pm. On Thursday, October 30 Mr Ken Humphries will be giving a talk on the Life and Music of George Gershwin. This is followed on Thursday, November 6 by a talk on the North Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Welcome Back: Hello to everyone and welcome back to Harlow News. I last wrote a column for the paper just before the school summer holidays and have been away for most of that time catching up with family and friends and making the most of what sunny weather there was! I return refreshed but also seeking more news from those in the local community for the Harlow area. I no longer have time to chase news stories and can only really continue with this column if those of you involved with events on the hill send me in your news. My plan is to carry on for a little while with Harlow News, hoping for you support! So please, if you are involved with any local club or society, school, playschool or nursery or have any special news about folk who live on Harlow hill, contact me and I will be delighted to continue with Harlow News. I aim to do a column every fortnight and you can contact me on the E mail above or by telephone.
Night Classes: The start of a new school year is always the time of year when opportunities also become available for adults to extend their education or to take up a new interest. This autumn language classes are available in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish and Russian as well as basic numeracy and literacy classes. There seems to be something here for everyone and right on the doorstep, so why not take advantage of local opportunities.

Harlow News
I shall be taking a break from writing Harlow News over the summer holiday. Below I attach a few details about events that I am aware of happening during the rest of July and August. If there is anyone out there who is keen to take on the role of writing a regular column for the Harlow area I would be pleased to hear from you. Please contact me on my E mail address for more details.
Sponsored Walk
Many congratulations to the 4th Harrogate Brownies who braved an extremely wet evening recently to take part in the Sponsored Walk to raise money for Harlow Hill Methodist Church where the girls meet on a Thursday. The girls took part in a circuit walk near Rossett Ponds along the public footpaths and notably Hannah and Harriet completed 11 laps each as they ran all evening! In total the unit raised over £200 as their fund-raising effort which was fantastic. Church members at Harlow Hill took part in a walk after the Sunday service and hope to have raised about £500 for the Church kitchen fund once all the money is in. Many thanks go to all those who sponsored walkers and supported this event.
Allotments Open Day
On Saturday August 2 the annual Harlow Hill Allotment Open Day will take place between 1.30-4pm at the Harlow Hill Allotment site on Beckwith Avenue. There will be lots to see at this event and included in the afternoon will be a sale of site grown fruit and vegetables, cakes, jams and pickles and a craft stall, a tombola, a honey stall and cone exchange, WRAP composting and refreshments. Visitors will be able to walk around the Harlow allotment site, admire the scarecrows and the diverse array of fruit and vegetables grown on the highest and most exposed allotment site in the town! Please note that the 106 bus stops right outside the allotment site!
Summer At Harlow Carr
From this week a Summer Art exhibition runs daily until Sunday August 10 at Harlow Carr Gardens. This is an annual exhibition showcasing local talent from around Yorkshire. On Monday August 4 RHS Garden Explorers will be having a Papermaking event. This is your chance to get creative, making paper using natural materials from the garden. All materials are provided but spaces are limited. Family Fortnight takes place from Sunday August 10 – Sunday August 24 with a variety of events being staged. Carnival Day also takes place on Sunday August 10 a fun carnival style celebration of flowers, come dressed up as your favourite flower, make a mask or flower hat, decorate the carnival float and much more! On the same theme Pirate Day takes place on Sunday August 24. A Kitchen Garden Walk takes place on Thursday August 14 and an Herbaceous Perennials walk on Thursday August 21, both from 2-3.30 pm. Finally it is Grow Your Own Veg Harvest Time on Monday August 18 with talks, demonstrations and displays taking place all day. So, lots to see and do right on our doorstep! Full details are available on the Harlow Carr website or by calling 565418. Please note that bookings are taken for some of the events mentioned above.
Rossett Sports Centre
There are lots of things happening at Rossett Sports Centre throughout the summer holidays every day except the August Bank Holiday Monday. Some of the opportunities available for children aged from 4-12 years old include a sports taster day, mask making, hand and foot painting, tie dye, clay modelling, Play Day, puppet and suncatcher making, bikes and blades day, a cinema trip, Wet ‘N Wild day, multisports, juggling, scratch art and Bounce Around. Horticap
Many congratulations to everyone at Horticap on the recent success in gaining a Gold Medal at the Great Yorkshire Show this year and in such a special year which celebrated 150 years of the show in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen. Horticap is a wonderful place to visit at any time of the year and coming up later in August from August 25-31 there is to be a Rainforest Festival. This will be a series of events and an exhibition of student’s work on the Rainforest theme to highlight the pledge by Betty’s and Taylor’s of Harrogate to save 1,000,000 rainforest trees. On Sunday August 31 Scarecrow Sunday takes place. Please bring along your scarecrow from 10.15. The winner will be announced at 3.15pm.
Building Development
As many of you will know there are proposals to build future housing for the Harrogate area all on the western side of the town. These plans still remain despite many objections to possible schemes. In view of this the Harlow and Pannal Ash Resident’s Association has once more joined forces with other Resident Organisations under the banner of RASH (Residents Against Spoiling Harrogate). A meeting is planned for the week commencing August 4 in the Soothill Hall at Ashville College. This will be the only public meeting. Residents can check out the plan details on the Council web site, at the Harrogate Reference Library and the Council Offices and have until August 22 to make any objections to the proposals. If you would like further information or would like to come along to the Public Meeting, please contact Terry Byrne, Chair of the Harlow and Pannal Ash Resident’s Association on 568391.
Summer Greetings
I sincerely hope that we shall all enjoy a little more in the way of sunshine over the school summer holidays. July has been pretty dismal so far, the weather spoiling so many local fund-raising and social events. I am hoping for much better over the next few weeks. If you are away on holiday have a wonderful time and some wonderful weather!

Platinum Celebrations
Many of you will have seen the article in last week’s Harrogate Advertiser about Elsie and Reg Jackson’s 70th wedding anniversary celebrations. I saw the couple at Church this morning and Elsie was full of all the celebrations which happened to celebrate this truly special occasion. She was particularly delighted with so many small acts of kindness shown to both herself and Reg over this happy period and I would like to pass this thanks on to all of their many friends who have been a part of their lives together. Also a chance for me to pass on once again my sincerest congratulations to you both on a memorable achievement and a wish of more years of happiness yet to come!

Congratulations i
It is always a pleasure for me to report good news or news of success in this column! I was delighted to learn that Harlow resident Robert Whiteley has just been appointed the new President of the Harrogate Chamber of Trade. Robert is the General Manager at the Pavilions of Harrogate but in his spare time he is also one of the Harrogate Town Pastors. In addition Robert is on the committee of the Tewit Youth Band and attends Harlow Hill Methodist Church. He also happens to be a great chef!! Good news indeed, a success well-deserved.
Horticap
As I write this column on a Sunday night, I have just seen the weather forecast reporting a frost tonight! It seems hard to believe after the glorious week recently! I have been today to Horticap to stock up on bedding plants and feel I must once again mention this gem of a place in my column. Horticap is right on our doorstep on the Otley Road to Beckwithshaw. At the centre, the entry to the plant centre and to the garden has been altered and is now through the shop. This provides the visitor with a spectacular view of the garden before proceeding to plant sales. It really did look splendid this morning and now that refreshments are also available, what a great place to sit and enjoy a coffee before stocking up on plants for your own garden! Horticap is a registered charity.
Friendship Club
Meetings of the Harlow Friendship Club take place each Wednesday afternoon at 2.30 in the Green Hut, Harlow Community Centre. On Wednesday May 28 there will be a popular Bingo session and on Wednesday June 4 Robert Bashforth gives a musically illustrated talk entitled Take a Sparkling Pair. The programme for the Club runs until the end of June and new members are always welcome.
Church Improvements
Usage of the Church and hall at Harlow Hill Methodist Church has increased a great deal over the past year and to cope with the numbers now using the building, the kitchen has just been upgraded and is looking splendid. Later in the summer, there will be a Sponsored Walk on a weekend day which is intended to be a family social day as well as a fund-raising effort. More details will follow in this column.
Harlow Carr
During the half-term holiday the emphasis at Harlow Carr Gardens will be on Wildlife in the Garden with the theme running all week. Come along and focus on the wildlife that thrives in the garden, with themed walks and talks, plus wildlife-inspired craft workshop and a photography taster session. This event will run from Saturday May 24 until Sunday June 1 from 10am-4pm
Harlow Allotments
With my children now living around the country it is interesting to learn that the popularity of running allotments seems to be countrywide. At Harlow Hill Allotment Association there is a long waiting list and has been for a few years now. At the weekend the site was filled with keen gardeners planting and tending to crops or battling with the weeds which seem to grow so well and so quickly following the recent warm spell. With the blossoms all out it really is an attractive part of our community and with its own conservation area too! Last week a group of local artists were out on the pavement alongside the site taking their inspiration from the garden plants. The Harlow Allotment shop is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10.30-noon each weekend and you can take advantage of the stock available by becoming an associate member of the Association even if you do not have a plot. For further details just come along to the shop at the weekend and find out more.

Review Rossett Acre Pantomime – The Wizard Of Roz
The recipe is simple – take one community school and one enthusiastic and committed group of parents and children. Shake them in a pot which includes a new writer, some old experienced hands, some excited children, some adults who just love dressing up, some song and dance, some dreadful jokes, a lot of glitter and a silly story and there you have it, the Rossett Acre Pantomime, now in its 18th year and this year attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Harrogate
This year’s show was written and directed for the first time by Robert Brown and was loosely based on the tale of the Wizard of Oz. He cast himself in the role of Connie and was quite a presence on stage in his bright pink fairy outfit!
Central to the story telling were Dorothy (Kath Clayson) complete with sparkling red welly boots and Toto the Dog (Bryn Hoyle) whose humorous double act entertained everyone throughout the evening. As the plot unfolded the audience were introduced to a variety of characters to love and to hate. John Chester made the most of his short time on stage as the Gwendolyn, the nice Wicked Witch of the West, before being killed by an arrow around the head! Val Hall, excelled as the splendidly awful Eunice, Wicked Witch of the East! On their journey to the Wizard, Dorothy and Toto were gradually joined by familiar figures from the story. The scarecrow Bertie Bassett, played by Martin Dickson, resembled an allsort and had liquorice for a brain! With his bright pink face and big hat – this was a funny performance from the joker in the group, his Curly Wurly getting many laughs. The tin man Tick Tock (Nick Sharp) and the lioness Fluffy (Claire Wheat) completed Dorothy’s friends. Also in this tale was played out the search for true love with an able performance from the handsome Prince Percy (Andrea Stark) and his entourage George and Sam (Sue Lewis and Michelle Hayes) pursuing Dorothy along the yellow brick road. On the night of February 29, the end proposal was made by Dorothy to the Prince as befits Leap Year day! John Riggs as Dennis the Guard at the home of the Wizard was hilarious with his odd march and a complex dialogue involving swallows and coconuts!
Some of the staff at Rossett Acre Primary School were involved in the traditional slapstick scene after the interval although they were virtually unrecognizable as Trolls! The children would be delighted to see Headteacher Corinne Penhale decked out in sacking eventually getting a custard pie in the face!
During the week two sets of children had been working extremely hard to provide a host of other roles in the production, animals, guards, doormen, monkeys, health and safety officers, a rabbit, waiter and the prologue as well as some great dancers choreographed by Alison and Beth Bell.
No show can work without a huge network of support and this production had it once again. Musical direction was in the capable hands of Chris Davies and the play was produced by Andrea Stark and Joyce Hannam – Joyce also looked after all the children involved, a huge amount of work, along with Chris Wood and Julie Dewar. Then there were all the background staff for wardrobe, make-up, props, sound and lighting who were all so enthusiastic and obviously enjoying every minute.
Throughout the evening the audience had joined in with much cheering, jeering, singing and laughing which generally left us all feeling that we had much enjoyed an event which is now part of the life of those at Rossett Acre School. Well done to all of you involved in staging the Wizard of Roz and I look forward to next year and another successful Pantomime.

It is that time of the year again when the parents, staff and pupils at Rossett Acre Primary School prepare to put on the annual pantomime! Once again I was delighted to be contacted about the show which will take place at the end of February from Wednesday February 27 to Saturday March 1. This year the show is based on the story of the Wizard of Oz. I shall be going along to the school to review the show and always look forward to an evening of excellent entertainment. Rossett Acre performances usually have everything in them associated with in the Pantomime tradition with always a little extra as well! Wendy House Nursery: Towards the end of last year I wrote in this column about the Wendy House Day Nursery [2007]Ltd which was to open up on Harlow Hill at Central House on Otley Road in November. Victoria Newman is the owner of this new business and many of you will know her mum Angela who contacts me regularly with news of other local events. The Day Nursery has 46 places for children aged from three months to five years. Gradually the name of the nursery is being known locally, but if you have just moved into the area or are looking for a childcare placement, you may be interested in contacting Victoria on 505010 for further details.
Charity Bid: In my last column I mentioned the New York visit for local youngsters Jenny Lawton, Carla Bromhead and Joe Duckworth who won through to the finals of a competition organised by JP Morgan to bid for money for their chosen charity, which in this case was for the charity COCO and specifically for the Uru North Project in Tanzania. The experience of presenting their case for their chosen charity to a panel of executives from JP Morgan was apparently amazing! Although the team did not win the main prize of $25,000, they are now allowed to put in a bid for money for COCO, which is something they fully intend to do. The finalists in the competition were all American apart from one team from Northern Ireland. An all expenses paid trip to the Big Apple for these young people was indeed a wonderful experience all round. Well done indeed to them all!
Coffee Morning: Tomorrow, Saturday, February 2, will see the first of the usual monthly coffee mornings to be held at Harlow Hill Methodist Church. If you missed cakes in January, now is your chance to come along and buy. In addition to the popular cake stall, coffee will be served from 10am-noon. The next major refurbishment of the Church will involve a new kitchen, so it is hoped that you will come along and give your support. Don’t forget also that the Harlow Hill Jigsaw Puzzle Club happens at this coffee morning and runs rather like a library. There are lots of puzzles to choose from and all are available to borrow for just 50 pence each.
Men’s Forum: Metings of the Harlow Men’s Forum take place each Tuesday at Harlow Hill Methodist Church commencing with coffee at 10am followed by the main business of the meeting. On Tuesday, February 5 Mrs A Henson will talk about 2000 year of Walking in the Dales. On Tuesday, February 12 Mr D Simister will tell members something of the workings of the Harrogate Hospital Radio. New members are most welcome at these regular meetings. For further information contact George Mountford on 564858.
Friendship Club: The Harlow Friendship Club for the over – 50’s meets each Wednesday afternoon at the Harlow Community Centre [Green Hut] on Harlow Avenue starting at 2.30pm. On Wednesday, February 6 Alun Pugh will give a talk with photographs entitled Dei Goes to War. On Wednesday, February 13 Geoff Scurrah will talk about the work of the Pinewoods Conservation Group. Once again new members are most welcome to come along and the new programme cards will be available as soon as they are returned from the printers!
Allotment Association: The high winds of last week caused a certain amount of devastation at the Harlow Hill Allotment site, particularly for sheds! Last Saturday morning at least one whole shed had been lifted and deposited in a heap on the footpath and there was a certain amount of similar damage on the site, it is indeed a very windy place to garden! Those of you who have allotments or are members of the Harlow Hill Allotment Association will need to note that it is annual payment time starting from the beginning of February. The allotment shop will be open from Saturday, February 2 from 10.30am-noon on both Saturdays and Sundays for the collection of rents. Whilst there, you can also take advantage of the allotment shop for your garden requirements.
Oasis: This group, also for the over-50’s meets each Thursday afternoon at 2.15pm at St Mary’s Church hall. On Thursday, February 7 there will be a member’s afternoon on the subject of My Favourite Book. On Thursday, February 14 Debbie Waller will give a talk on Pain Relief.
Pilates: For those of you interested in taking part in Pilates classes, just a small alteration to my column from last time! The Pilates classes which are held at Harlow Hill Methodist Church and run by Jacky Middleton, take place on Mondays from 9.30am, not 10am as I mentioned last time. There are also Wednesday classes at 10am and again in the evening at 7pm. All classes last for one hour. For more information please contact Jacky on 816480.
Harlow Carr: Already the half-term holidays are almost upon us and there will be undoubtedly be families looking for something to do during the holiday week. At the RHS Gardens at Harlow Carr, there are family quiz trails for the whole week starting on Saturday, February 9. Also not to be missed, Birds in the Garden - for this event there will be a series of themed activities and displays in the Study Centre throughout the week, and a family birdwatching walk to discover which birds can be found in the garden. Also at Harlow Carr in February, a New Look at Alpines workshop on Wednesday 6 February from 9.30am-3.30pm and a Hellebores and Hamamelis Day on Saturday, February 23 which includes a workshop in the afternoon. To book on to the two workshops or for more details of events, ring 565418.
Rossett Sports Centre: During the half-term week there will be a series of activities held at Rossett Sports Centre for children aged from 4 – 12 years old. Each day there will be a themed activity which includes days on Sports, Junk Clay Monsters, Bounce About, Mini-Commandoes and Monkey Around [an art attack!] All activities will be divided into two sections for 4 – 7 years and for 8 – 12 years. If you are interested in trampolining there will also be special coaching sessions over the holiday. Good Luck
Good wishes must go to local youngsters Jenny Lawton, Carla Bromhead and Joe Duckworth who are in New York today to put in their bid for money for their charity COCO. The three all attend Newcastle University and entered a competition in the autumn run by JP Morgan to bid for money for the charity COCO which they have become much involved with in their time at the University. Last summer they attempted the climb of Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money in the Kili for Kids Campaign and saw for themselves how the money was spent in Tanzania. If the group bid is successful today in New York, the team could win $25,000 for the Vocational Training Centre at Uru North in Tanzania. Good luck indeed to them all. I look forward to reporting on their visit in the next column.

Carol Singing
Those who live on Harlow Hill may know that each year a team of singers and players from Harlow Hill Methodist Church go out and about on the hill carol singing just before Christmas. This year the event will happen on Sunday December 23. Anyone can come along and join in the fun – meet at 6 pm at the Church opposite the Co-op for a bring and share supper before setting off for the carol singing at 7pm. The route usually taken is around the streets the Wharfedales, the Larkfields, the Beckwiths and the Harlows. Please if you hear the bell of your door ringing come and listen to the singing! The collection this year will be for the Harrogate Homeless Project.
Family Carol Service
There will be a family carol service with a difference on the morning of Sunday December 23 at 10 am at Harlow Hill Methodist Church. Please come along and enjoy carol singing and a few surprises as the Rev Leonora Wassell leads this all age worship service. Refreshments will be served afterwards.
Crib Service
Always a highlight with our children just before Christmas is the annual Crib Service, this year to be held at Harlow Hill Methodist Church on Christmas Eve at 4pm. The whole family is extended a warm welcome to come and hear the Christmas story and to set the crib figures ready for Christmas morning.
Christmas Services
Across the south of Harrogate, residents should have received a leaflet containing all the details of local services at all the churches in this area. I would like to take this opportunity just to highlight one or two for the Harlow area. At Harlow Hill Methodist Church for the first time this year, All Saints Church of England Church will be holding a Midnight Communion service to which all are most welcome at 11.30. In addition the Christmas morning services will be held at 9am for All Saints with communion and at 10am the Christmas Day Family Service also at Harlow Hill Methodist. At Trinity Methodist Church, services will be held on Christmas Eve at 11.30 and on Christmas morning at 11 am.

Post Office
I have no doubt that you will all have been shocked to see that the Post Office on Cold Bath Road is one of those in the district threatened with closure. When Harlow Hill Post Office was finally closed, we were actually told that Cold Bath Road Post Office was in walking distance and a good alternative! Now this Post Office is next on the list there will be no Post Office for us on this side of the town – our only alternative to actually go into town. This is not good news and I do hope that all of you who are regular readers of this column will muster yourselves and duly complain about this threat, both by writing and by signing the petitions available in local shops on Cold Bath Road. We lost Harlow Hill in spite of a concerted effort on the part of local residents to keep it open – let us not be complacent and loose this extremely important facility
Church Decoration
There is an addition to the normal coffee mornings at Harlow Hill Methodist Church this Saturday morning December 8, when members of the Church will be setting to work to decorate for Christmas. If you would like to be involved and call in during the morning, there will be lots to do and coffee will be served from 10am-noon although there will not be a cake stall on this morning. The more the merrier! If you are new to the area, please come in and say hello and escape from the Christmas shopping for a while.
Horticap
Over this weekend, Saturday December 8 and Sunday December 9 , Horticap Bluecoat Wood Nurseries on Otley Road will be having two special Open Days. If you have not visited Horticap before, then I really do recommend a trip. Here you can get your beautiful Christmas tree as well as being able to buy various other seasonal items including wreaths, swags, decorations, cards and gifts. On the Open Days join staff at the centre for seasonal refreshments and find that perfect hand crafted gift! Horticap is a registered charity and proceeds from sales here go directly into helping adults with learning disabilities.
Harlow Carr
Last weekend a Family Christmas theme was the focal point of activities at the RHS Harlow Carr Gardens, with Santa present and various activities for the whole family. I visited on an appalling wet Sunday afternoon and the indoors areas were all extremely busy. This really is a great place to do your shopping! On Thursday December 13 at Harlow Carr there is to be a Flowers for Christmas workshop from 10am-4pm, when there will be the chance to discover how to create floral displays for your home with designs that have a continental influence through to the more traditional options. A family Quiz trail is now available and there will also be two winter walks on Sunday December 23 at 11 am and 2pm. To book on to the Flowers course contact Harlow Carr on 565418.
Christmas Dates
You are warmly invited to join in any of the following services and events to be held just before Christmas. On Sunday December 16 at 4pm there will be a Candlight Carol Service at Harlow Hill Methodist Church featuring a variety of music, drama, readings and carols with refreshments served afterwards in the Church hall. Also on Sunday 16 December at Trinity Methodist Church 10.30 Morning Worship will be led by Rev Mark Godfrey and in the afternoon at 4pm there will be a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols.
I shall include details of other Christmas services in my next column but I do know that local people on Harlow Hill are always interested in when the Carol Singing will take place! This will be held on Sunday 23 December when singers and band assemble for a faith supper at Harlow Hill Methodist Church at 6 pm for a faith supper before setting off for two hours to sing our way around local streets. If you would like to get involved, just come along to the Church on the night for 6pm if you would like to join in the meal, or at 7pm if you just want to join in the singing. Wrap up warm and bring your best singing voices! This year the collection will be for the Harrogate Homeless Project.
Christmas Events
If details of your event have not appeared in this column it is because I did not know about them! It is easy to get in touch and certainly not too late to either let me know about things to come or report on things that have just happened.

Dracula Spectacula: Congratulations must go to the staff and pupils at Rossett School who put on an excellent production of Dracula Spectacula by John Gardiner, by kind permission of Samuel French Ltd. Rehearsal for the show began long before the summer holidays and it was marvellous to see these talent students put on performances over three evenings to delighted audiences. As well as students in the cast there were many students involved backstage in the creation of props, special effects, costumes, programme, sound and lighting. A total of about thirty staff were involved in the project along the way - a real whole school effort. Well done to everyone involved!
Men’s Forum: Meetings of the Harlow Men’s Forum are held each Tuesday morning in hall at Harlow Hill Methodist Church commencing at 10am with refreshments. On Tuesday, November 20 there is to be an Open Meeting where guests are invited to listen to Mrs M Lunn. The title of her talk is How Did You Get a Job Like That? If you want to find out more, please go along and ladies are also welcome to this meeting! For more information about the Harlow Men’s Forum, please contact secretary George Mountford on 564858.
Acoustic Night: If this is your kind of music then why not come along to Rossett School on the night of Tuesday, November 20 when students at the school are putting on an Acoustic Night from 7-9pm. Tickets cost just £5 and are available by contacting Rossett School on 564444 ext.214.
Friendship Club: Meetings of this group for the over 50’s take place at the Harlow Community Centre on Harlow Avenue at 2.30pm each Wednesday afternoon. On Wednesday, November 21 Sylvia Worrall will give a talk on Hypnotherapy and on Wednesday, November 28 members can look forward to being entertained by the U3A Singers. There is just one more meeting of the Club before Christmas and this will take the form of a Christmas Party on Wednesday, December 5.
Wendy House Day Nursery: I was delighted to be contacted this week by Angela Newman who organises the programme for the Harlow Friendship Club. Angela’s daughter Victoria has just embarked on a new enterprise which has been something of an ambition of hers since she was at school. Victoria went to school locally at Rossett Acre and the Rossett School and at the grand old age of 24 has just opened her new business locally. She is the brains behind the Wendy House Day Nursery [2007] Ltd which opened its doors to children from Monday,November 5. The Nursery is based in the Annex Building of Central House up on Otley Road and can take 44 children with immediate vacancies available. If you would like more information about the Nursery please do contact Victoria Newman on 505010. Good luck Victoria with your business - it is so good to hear a success story!
If you have a similar one you would like others to know about, then let me know!
Harlow Carr: Once again there are all sorts of events happening at the RHS Gardens at Harlow Carr which is really busy especially at the weekends, as anyone who lives locally will know! This weekend on both Saturday and Sunday there is to be a workshop entitled Illuminated Herbals with Colin Swinton. Gold leaf was used in medieval times to illuminate manuscripts and herbals. This workshop will look at traditional and more modern approaches to combining plant painting with gold. On Friday, November 23 Philip Lyth leads a workshop on Traditional Hedges and their maintenance, a course held in conjunction with the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group. On Saturday, November 24 you can make a Willow Angel with Phil Bradley - this is really a Christmas decoration with a difference, a willow angel to grace your home this season. To secure a place on any of these workshops and to find out full price details, contact Harlow Carr Gardens on 565418.
Oasis: This group also for the over 50’s meets at St Mary’s Church hall on Harlow Terrace each Thursday afternoon at 2.15pm. On Thursday, November 22 you can listen to Sylvia Worrall giving a demonstration and talk about Reflexology and Massage which I guess would rather complement the talk at the Friendship Club held the day before at the Harlow Community Centre! On Thursday, November 29, Lt.Com. Adrian Mack will be telling members about the Mission to Seafarers and there will also be items for sale at this event.
Horitcap: With Christmas fast approaching, many people are beginning to focus in on Christmas shopping, so why not pay a visit to Horticap on Otley Road on the way to Beckwithshaw and see what items they have to tempt you! As well as a big variety of plants for the winter garden, there are also candles, decorations and many other gifts for sale.
Christmas Events: By the time I write my next column I will be looking towards early December events locally. If you are organising anything or are aware of events going on which you would like me to mention, then please contact me in advance on contacts numbers above and I will be delighted to include you event or activity!

Harlow News – Charlotte South – 563502
Water, Water: As I write this week we have all spent the day in the rain and most of us can’t remember such a wet day in June in high summer. Water is literally everywhere – there are lakes and ponds all over our area. The advantage of being at the top of the hill is obvious as the water drains away but for our community further down the hill, this is not good news. If you have any watery tales to tell me about this week, do get in touch. Meanwhile if you are hosting an event this weekend I do hope that the sun will come out.
Safari Supper: Tonight from 6pm, friends of Harlow Hill Methodist Church will be enjoying a Safari Supper in our area when they set off to different houses to enjoy a four course meal in four different venues. The idea for the supper was to say goodbye to Christina and Matthew from America who have been settled on Harlow Hill for two years. Christina has become part of the church community and been a real friend to many here. Last week she was presented with some books on Yorkshire from members at the Church, given in a gift box created by Andrew High. All good wishes go to Christina and Matthew as they return to make their home in Washington.
Horticap: It is rather hard to write about flowers with all the rain about, but if you are thinking of ways to brighten up your garden, you might like to go along to Horticap Nurseries on the road to Beckwithshaw. The Nurseries are open every day from 10am until 4pm and currently have ready planted tubs and pots for sale. If you spend your money here you know that it will be going to a really good cause.
Harlow Carr: The Sustainable Gardening event has now started at Harlow Carr Gardens. From 10am-4pm every day until Sunday, July 8 there are displays and information to help you ding out about the gardening techniques and practices that can help you garden in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way. On Thursday, July 5 at 2pm at the garden entrance, meet to enjoy a walk around the working bins at Harlow Carr to find out how the experts deal with their compostable waste!
Gift Day Appeal: Over the last year members of Harlow Hill Methodist Church and All Saints Church have shared the premises at the Methodist Church including monthly services together. There are many uncertainties about how things will progress at All Saints but it is hoped that shared life will bring great advantages and that the two will continue to grow closer to serve Christ in our neighbourhood. Folk at Harlow Hill are a hospitable people and feed those who come not just in body, but also in mind and spirit. However the kitchen has seen better days and is due refurbishment! As Minister Shaun Swithenbank writes ‘Over the years this Church has been blessed with people whose gifts and skills have enabled the fullness of life in Christ to be shared with many others. The Church Council and I would like to thank you for your support over the past years and ask you to renew your commitment by offering your gifts for the work of the Church. Please consider what you can offer and bring your offers in terms of your time and skills, along with your gifts of money, to the Church at our Gift Day on Saturday, July 7 from 10am- noon.’ There will also be the usual coffee morning and cake stall on this day. There will also be a Dedication of Gifts at a special service at 10am on Sunday, July 15.
Even if you have never set foot in the Church, this is the morning to come along and say hello, stop for a cup of coffee and sample the excellent cakes or borrow a jigsaw puzzle from the library held at the Church. It would be lovely to have as many visitors as possible on this special day.
