Apologies: Once again the gremlins got into the system and it seems my column for last week was deleted before it was even printed – or are they trying to tell me something? Regretfully all the events of last weekend did not receive their due coverage but I hope attendances at Bardsey Horticultural Society, the 5th Annual East Keswick Beer Festival and the Harvest Supper and Annual Quiz as well as Tea and Toast on Tuesday at the Methodist Church and Wednesday’s Mid-week Eucharist at St Mary’s were not unduly affected.
Annual Leukaemia Research Coffee Morning: Marion Hickson would like to remind all her friends and supporters of her annual coffee morning that this year it will take place tomorrow, Saturday, October 10, in Bardsey Village Hall, when they will again try to beat last year’s record. If you are free, please go along and give them your usual support.
Church Services this Sunday:
Sunday Eucharist at St Mary Magdalene’s, Moor Lane, at 9.15am; Morning Worship, with Junior Church and Crèche, at the Methodist Church, Main Street, at 10.30am will be led by the Rev Trevor Dixon and include Holy Communion. It will followed by refreshments in the Church Hall.
You are warmly invited to these services.
Bardsey and East Keswick Ecumenical Choir and friends will be hosting a Come and Sing performance of Handel’s Messiah, Part 1 at 7.30pm on Saturday, November 28 in All Hallows’ Church, Bardsey. 2009 sees the 250th anniversary of the death of Georg Fredrick Handel. In order to commemorate this event, rather than just invite singers to augment the chorus, string players are also invited to combine with the organ, accompanying the five choruses and, possibly, Overture and Pastoral Symphony, as was the case in Handel’s time. The success of this new venture depends on the support of string players, who may not have played for some time but who could brush up to perform this major work. Rehearsals will be held on Monday evenings at 7.45pm in East Keswick Methodist Church from Monday next, October 12, for those who would like to participate and are not familiar with the work. String players, who might wish to be involved, are asked to contact Malcolm Bury on 01937 574136. Previous Come and Sings have been very successful and it is hoped that this year’s performance is no exception.
East Keswick Women’s Institute will meet in the Verity Room at the Village Hall on Tuesday, October 13 at 2pm, when Mrs Joyce Brithray will be speaking on her travels in Chile. Do go along and join them if you can; you will be most welcome.
East Keswick Flower Club: This month’s meeting is on Thursday, October 15 at 1.30pm in East Keswick Village Hall, when Janice Kirk’s topic will be Glorious Autumn. This year’s Christmas demonstration will be on Friday, December 4 when they welcome Kate Russell and Patti Dawson with Christmas is coming – here we go again!. Tickets cost £8.50 and can be obtained from any Committee member. The club’s Christmas outing is to Arley Hall on December 10.
East Keswick Voluntary Care Group – Help Needed: This small group of volunteers is in desperate need of some new people to help keep this valuable service to our village going. If you have a car and can spare some time to occasionally help anyone who needs assistance, please contact Jan or Fiona. The group is available to help anyone, of any age, who needs assistance, transport locally to doctors’ and dentists’ surgeries, opticians and clinics. They also do home visits for anyone who is alone or house-bound. For help this month please phone Jan Dower on 01937 572149. If she is unavailable, then ring, Margaret Bury 574136, Susan Priestley 572227 or Fiona Siekierkowski 572836.

East Keswick
Apologies: Somehow the gremlins got in to last week’s village news and there was an error in the telephone number for the ‘The Duke of Wellington’. Apologies, therefore, to anyone who tried to contact them and, also, to the unfortunate recipient of any unsolicited calls. Suffice it to say that The Duke is now serving generous, sensibly priced meals every day: Monday to Saturday, noon-2.30pm and 6pm to 9pm; and Sunday Lunch, noon to 6pm. And, if you do need to contact them, the number is 01937 573259.

Church services this Sunday: Sunday Eucharist at St Mary Magdalene’s, Moor Lane, at 9.15am; Morning Worship, with Junior Church and Crèche, at the Methodist Church, Main Street, at 10.30am will be led by the Minister, Rev Steve Barlow, and include Holy Communion. It will followed by refreshments in the Church Hall.

All will be made most welcome at either service.

Tea & Toast on a Tuesday: Thirsty? Hungry? Fancy a bit of company? Why not stop for ‘Tea & Toast on a Tuesday’? All are welcome to drop in to East Keswick Methodist Church between 2.30pm and 4pm (ish) on the first and third Tuesdays of the month for a drink, a bite to eat and friendly conversation. There are toys and games available for those with young children. The next get-together is on Tuesday August 18. Why not give it a try? Advance Notice 1: Bardsey Horticultural Society Annual Show – Saturday September 5: If you need something to occupy the children during the remainder of the summer holiday, encourage them to practice pictures from pasta shapes, decorating biscuits with birds, making an edible alien or growing their own vegetables for a new show class this year. If your apples promise to be sweet and juicy, your runner beans prolific and your cakes and jams delicious, then why not join in the fun and enter them in your local village show on Saturday September 5? It costs only 20p per class entry and there are lots of prizes to be won. Please submit your entry form by Thursday September 3 and note that exhibits should be staged in Bardsey Village Hall by 10.45am on Saturday September 5. East Keswick - Judith Pentith 01937 574965
The Duke of Wellington is Back in Business: After being closed for more than six months ‘The Duke’ has now re-opened under the management of village lad Scott Burton. While currently open from 12noon to 11pm for drinks only, it is planned that, before too long, lunchtime and evening meals will be served. This is good news for the village and the local community and we wish Scott every success.
Reminder For East Keswick Wildlife Trust: On Saturday, July 18 there will be a work party to move logs in Ox Close Wood. Everyone is welcome to join them, so, if you are feeling strong and have plenty of energy, meet at 10am at Crabtree Lane car park. Call Melanie or David Smith on 01937 574140 for more information.
Church services this Sunday: Sunday Eucharist at St Mary Magdalene’s, Moor Lane, at 9.15am; Morning Worship, with Junior Church, at the Methodist Church, Main Street, at 10.30am will be led by the Rev Trevor Dixon and will include Communion. The service will be followed by refreshments in the Church Hall. You will be most welcome at these services.
East Keswick Village Hall – Computer Suite and Training: There are now four computers and an advanced Wi Fi system. There will be an open evening on Thursday, July 30 at 7.30pm for everyone to see what is available and to talk about any computer tutorials they would like. This service is for everyone who feels they are being left out of this new world. Do you wish to know about any of the following, for example email, accounts, filing, photographs, best ways of using Google to buy things and Skype to see and talk to your friends and family across the world for free? There are many other requirements that may come to light. The village hall has been given grants for the equipment and is offering the facilities free for the first year. There will be a small charge for the tutor. The aim is for the computer sessions to be informal and fun, where a group of friends can meet and learn the bits about computers they want to know. All are welcome from East Keswick, Bardsey and Scarcroft. Please support this new village initiative.
East Keswick Rounders Team: A young people’s team could start in the village if enough interest is shown. This would be a great opportunity to make new friends in the village, have a good time and take part in competitions. If you are interested, please spread the word and call or text Kristina Mawer, a village resident, on 07800 786748.
The Feast of St Mary Magdalene was Celebrated on Sunday: A packed church, made up of the congregations of St Mary’s, All Hallows’, Bardsey and East Keswick Methodist Church, together with villagers, joined in an uplifting service, led by the new vicar, the Rev Chris Puckrin, who welcomed Sue Cairns and Graham Plant as Church Wardens. The Rev Bill Snelson, a former vicar of the parish, gave the address and Heather Shipman, the Methodist Lay Pastor, led the prayers. It is hoped that this was only the first of many such occasions.
The Big Lunch: The Big Lunch was also held on Sunday at the village hall. Numbers attending were somewhat disappointing but that may have been down to the cloud burst experienced only an hour beforehand. In the end, the two dozen or so, who did brave the elements, tucked into a good selection of savouries and sweets, while chatting to friends, old and new, on the terrace under a blazing sun. That’s the English weather for you. Janet Thornton did her best but even she cannot control the elements!

East Keswick - Judith Pentith 01937 572958:
Church Services this Sunday: Sunday Eucharist at St. Mary Magdalene’s, Moor Lane, at 9.15 am; Morning Worship, with Junior Church, at the Methodist Church, Main Street, at 10.30 am will be led by the Lay Pastor, Heather Shipman. The service will be followed by refreshments in the Church Hall.
East Keswick Wildlife Trust: On Sunday, 12 July, there will be a survey of dragonflies, damselflies and thistle broomrape as part of the ongoing natural history survey of East Keswick. Everyone is welcome to join the group. Please meet at 10am outside the Duke of Wellington. On Saturday, 18 July, there will be a work party to move logs in Ox Close Wood. Again everyone is welcome to join them. Please meet at 10am at Crabtree Lane car park. Call Melanie or David Smith on 01937 574140 for more information on either event.
East Keswick Women’s Institute: Their next meeting is on Tuesday, July 14 at 2pm in the Verity Room, East Keswick Village Hall, when they have a surprise speaker lined up! If you want to find out more, why not go along? Guests are always welcome if you would like to join them.
The Big Lunch: Sunday, July 19, from 12.30pm. This is a national initiative aimed primarily at encouraging street parties www.thebiglunch.com and it is endorsed by the Fairtrade Foundation. But a street party is far too restrictive for us! You are invited to come and join in a village lunch party in the village hall and grounds; (inside if wet, outside if fine). Everyone is welcome. It will be a 'faith' lunch; in other words - bring your own food to share with others. So bring something savoury or sweet, bought or homemade - it doesn't matter; a salad, a quiche, some sandwiches, a cake whatever you like, but all that is asked is that it is appropriate for the size of your party. i.e. don't just bring half a dozen sausage rolls if you are a family with three ravenous teenage boys! Equally, if you are a couple, you don't need to bring enough food for six! If you want a beer or some wine or lemonade - bring your own. Please bring your own plastic plates and glasses if you want to be outside. It will be like having a giant picnic. Bring a rug or picnic table and chairs if you would like to sit on the lawn. There will be tables and chairs in the hall for those that would prefer/need a seat or if the weather is inclement. Plates, cutlery and glasses will be available for indoor use. It is particularly hoped to include villagers across the whole spectrum of ages, from families with young children to the elderly and everyone in between. So please, tell your neighbours about it, particularly those who live alone and encourage them to come along. (Anyone elderly and on their own will not be expected to bring food. Surely there are plenty of people who will be willing to bring a little extra to compensate?) The Methodist Church has kindly agreed to rearrange its annual barbecue in order to be able to support this event. For those of you who are budding stars, they may even have an 'open mike' session in case you might like to entertain them - recite a poem, sing a song, play an instrument. If no one does, they won't! It is intended to be a chilled informal event, with very little 'organisation'. Let's all just turn up and see how it evolves. There will be an opportunity to try out the new computer suite too. A donation of £1 per adult will be invited to cover the cost of hiring the hall.
East Keswick Voluntary Care Group: The group is available to help anyone, of any age, who needs assistance, transport locally to doctors’ and dentists’ surgeries, opticians and clinics. They also do home visits for anyone who is alone or house-bound. For help this month please phone Jan Dower on 01937 572149. If she is unavailable, then ring, Margaret Bury 574136, Susan Priestley 572227 or Fiona Siekierkowski 572836.

Licensing of the New Vicar: Everyone is looking forward with great anticipation to the licensing service for the Rev Chris Puckrin, by Bishop John Packer, on Thursday, June 25 at 7.30pm at The Parish Church of All Hallows in Bardsey. Chris is in reality to be the new vicar but, in legal terms, he will be the ‘priest with pastoral responsibility’ and so the service will differ from that for previous incumbents. It will be a community and ecumenical occasion and everyone is invited, both to the service and to the reception afterwards in Bardsey Village Hall. To make arrangements easier, for both the service and the reception, you are asked to sign up on the sheets in All Hallows’, St Mary Magdalene’s or the Methodist Churches; alternatively you could contact Mike Thorn on 0113 2893301 or email him at mandrthorn@aol.com .

Car Parking: Inconsiderate parking is causing problems for pedestrians, particularly those with push-chairs or those who use a wheel-chair. Do you ever park across the pavement? Please spare a thought for those who cannot pass between your vehicle and the wall and have to go into the road to get by. One of the pleasures of living in a village is the ability to go just about anywhere on foot – and without having to take your life in your hands every time you go out. Provided there is sufficient room for another vehicle to pass, cars should be parked completely on the road. This leaves the pavement free for walkers and has the added advantage of slowing passing traffic. Please keep East Keswick safe: Roads are for Cars; Pavements are for People.

East Keswick Wildlife Trust: A dozen or so stalwart souls braved the elements last Saturday for the first natural history photography course run for the trust by Paul Miguel, a professional wildlife and landscape photographer, in Ox Close Wood. Despite the poor weather, there was much to see and photograph and Paul, as well as the other participants!, offered plenty of help and advice, be it ‘framing’ a landscape or focusing on a tiny insect. The day culminated in the spectacular firing of the charcoal burner – a sight to behold. It was good that the event attracted newcomers from both the local villages and further afield, all of whom plan to swell the membership of the trust.

East Keswick Local History Group: Held its first Day School last week and what interesting lessons they proved to be. More than 30 people attended the school, coming from within the village and from as far afield as Chester. The Yorkshire Vernacular Buildings Study Group provided the promised guidance and expertise with talks, guided walks and instruction in recording buildings, with particular reference to an old barn within East Keswick. The insight they gave relating to the background of several of our historic buildings means that we shall all take much more notice of our surroundings than hitherto. Margaret Moseley presented an overview of the village’s history and Steve Bassett talked about the trials and tribulations encountered when restoring an old cottage – or was it the manorial bake-house in a previous life? Hopefully this is only the first such Day School as I, for one, found it fascinating. Thanks go to all who took the time and trouble to organize the event so efficiently, not forgetting the caterer who laid on a delicious lunch as well as a regular coffee fix!

Action for Children: The annual collection in the village will take place from Saturday, April 18 to Sunday, April 26. NCH (National Children’s Home) has changed its name to Action for Children. It is felt that the new name better reflects the wide ranging work the charity carries out for children and young people. It is hoped that you will continue to support this excellent charity and welcome the voluntary collectors who knock on your door.

Church Services this Sunday: Sunday Eucharist at St Mary Magdalene’s, Moor Lane, at 9.15am, celebrated by the Rev Clive Handford;
Morning Worship at the Methodist Church, Main Street, at 10.30am, led by Dennis Ashton from Boston Spa. It will followed by refreshments in the Church Hall.
All will be made most welcome at either church.

East Keswick Parish Council: The Annual Parish Assembly will take place in East Keswick Village Hall at 8pm on Tuesday, April 21. The doors will be open at 7.45pm and, after the Assembly is concluded, there will be a complimentary glass of wine. This is your opportunity to raise questions about issues that have faced the village and to hear how the parish council has dealt with them. Your comments and views about any matter affecting the village will be welcome. Your councillors look forward to seeing you on April 21 at 8pm.

St George’s Day – Thursday, April 23: You are invited to join the annual St George’s Day celebration in the Callister Hall, Bardsey, where superb afternoon teas will be served between 2pm & 4pm and there will be a resident pianist there to entertain you.

Carer Wanted: A lady with Parkinson’s needs a live in carer to provide support with all aspects of daily living in the mornings and evenings; fond of children and animals; other help employed. Please telephone Colin on 01937 572829 for further information.

Bardsey and East Keswick Ecumenical Choir: ‘The Cross of Christ’, a Music Devotion for Holy Week, which was presented at the Church of St Mary Magdalene before Easter, was well received by those who attended. The choir will now take a short break before resuming rehearsals for a Summer Light Music Concert of secular items. They will next meet on Monday, May 18 at 7.45pm at the Methodist Church, Main Street and would welcome anyone interested in joining them. There are no auditions – pleasure in singing, together with enthusiasm, are all that is required, though a good sense of humour helps! East Keswick - Judith Pentith 01937 574965:
Church Services on Good Friday: Service around the Lenten Cross at the Methodist Church, Main Street, at 9am. Said Matins at St. Mary Magdalene’s, Moor Lane, at 9.15am, Church services this Sunday, Easter Day:
Easter Eucharist at St. Mary Magdalene’s, Moor Lane, at 9.15am, celebrated by the Venerable Peter Burrows, the Archdeacon of Leeds;
Morning Worship at the Methodist Church, Main Street, at 10.30 am, will be ‘All Age Worship’, led by the Lay Pastor, Heather Shipman, and will include the transformation of the Lenten Cross with flowers (some will be available if you forget to bring any with you) and Holy Communion, at which the Minister, Rev Steve Barlow will preside. The service will be followed by refreshments in the Church Hall. All will be made most welcome at any of these services.
Methodist Coffee Shop: This will continue during April on Tuesdays the 14, 21 & 28, from 10.30am to noon. Consideration is being given as to the best weekday on which to hold future get-togethers, during either the morning or the afternoon. If you have been unable to come because the time was not good for you and would like to suggest an alternative, please let me know. There is currently no charge and you can sit and drink coffee and chat for as long as you like. Everyone is welcome – you do not have to be a ‘senior’ or attend chapel.
East Keswick Women’s Institute: At their next meeting, on Tuesday, April 14 at 2pm. in the Verity Room at the village hall, Miss Tindle will talk on ‘Bygone Days (Land Army Life)’.
East Keswick Flower Club: Their next meeting is on Thursday, April 16 at 1.30 pm, when Heather Hayes from Bolton will demonstrate Welcome to my World of Colour. Join them in East Keswick Village Hall, as a visitor, and see if you like it!
TOGETHER; in Bardsey and East Keswick: Once again, members of all the churches in both villages, and beyond, have enjoyed the Lent programme of visits to alternative places of worship, all of which have been well supported.
The first visit, to the Coptic Orthodox Church in Arthington, introduced us to a fledgling branch of an old Christian church, struggling to establish itself in a former Anglican Church, which they had only taken over in December. There is much work to be done and, with the determination shown by the members, many of whom travel long distances, no-one can doubt it will be achieved.
The second visit, to the Shadwell Lane Synagogue, gave an insight into an even older religion, Judaism. Containing elements of previous synagogues from within the city, particularly a wonderful collection of torahs (scrolls), both ancient and more modern, the building has successfully blended the old with the new and contains much to be admired.
After a multi-million pound refurbishment, we were enthralled with the magnificence of St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Cathedral in Leeds, claimed by many to be second only to Westminster Cathedral in London. (Even that lowly ranking was questioned by the enthusiastic archivist who showed us round!)
Our final visit was to the Quaker Meeting House in Leeds, which gave us an insight into a very different form of worship. Though long periods of silence may not suit the majority, we left with much food for thought.
Thanks must go to the people who, with unfailing hospitality, gave up their time to proudly and enthusiastically show us their buildings and introduce us to their faiths, and also to the members of ‘Churches Together in Bardsey and East Keswick’

Said Matins at St Mary Magdalene’s, Moor Lane, at 9.15am,

Thank You 1: Farewell to the Rev Raymond and Anne Pearson: Raymond writes to thank everyone who sent their good wishes and inundated them with cards and gifts when they left the Vicarage at the end of February. The last weekend of February was most uplifting and moving and they thank all who worked hard to make that so memorable. Some of the moments have been captured in photographs which they will treasure. An album of these is available to view in St Mary Magdalene’s Church and copies may be ordered, by Sunday, April 19 at the latest. Mike Thorn, Churchwarden, adds his thanks to all who helped with the organisation and work for the lunch, receptions and services and to those who attended.

Thank You 2: Pat Annely would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped and supported her coffee morning in aid of the PSP Association on Saturday, March 21. On a beautiful spring morning it was well attended and everyone enjoyed themselves. They managed to raise £345 for the PSP charity.

Thank You 3: East Keswick Annual Gourmet Dinner: There must be something about good food: last Saturday saw some 120 villagers, friends and relations come together to enjoy a superb meal, as always. Thanks must go, not only to the organizers, whose meticulous planning ensured everything went smoothly, but also to the chefs for yet again serving up wonderful food and to the efficient team of waiters, made up of the very polite and helpful young people. While helping to raise an anticipated £2,000 for the ongoing development of the village hall, this is one event that needs no arm twisting to support – the room could have been filled twice over. If you missed out this time, do be sure to book your place in good time next year.

Gas Mains Works in Main Street: If all has been completed to schedule and there are no more delays due to bad weather, the village should by now be getting back to normal. (Though hasn’t it been pleasant not to have had commuting traffic rushing along our narrow streets?) It will be a great relief for our small businesses, who have surely suffered during the road closure. Please do support them – they need us to keep them going and wouldn’t we miss them if they were not there?
Women’s World Day of Prayer: Our local service is today, Friday, at 2pm in St Mary Magdalene Church, Moor Lane, when the singing will be led by the Ecumenical Choir. If you haven’t room for a full vegetable patch or simply want to grow food on your patio, then get some tips at their March meeting tonight, Friday. Steve Wright will give a talk on ‘growing vegetables and herbs in containers’ at 7.45pm in Bardsey Village Hall. Non members welcome for £1 charge.

The first visit is to the Coptic Orthodox Church, Arthington on Wednesday, March 11. Based in what was formerly St Peter’s Anglican Church, the Coptic Church, Arthington, serves a congregation drawn from West and North Yorkshire. The Coptic faith is one of the oldest forms of Christianity. Meet at the Church at 7.30pm (car park adjacent to the church). They leave at the end of the summer term in July 2009. As you are probably aware, their roles are totally voluntary but the rewards are immeasurable. If you are interested in ensuring that the East Keswick Rainbow Unit continues, please call Susan Marley, their District Commissioner, on 01937 579468 to discuss becoming a Rainbow Guider. This is a thriving Unit with a healthy waiting list and is a much-valued integral part of Guiding in East Keswick.

East Keswick - Judith Pentith 01937 574965

Gas Mains Works in Main Street: United Utilities report that the recent bad weather has delayed progress and work will extend into a ninth week. Mains connections are being completed and the contractors request that villagers exercise special care around the road works, particularly those near Brooklands. They are concerned that some motorists have moved big metal fencing barriers, leaving road works in a potentially dangerous situation. Anyone purposely moving roadwork barriers to force a route through, which is closed, not only endangers themselves and others but risks prosecution under the Road Traffic Act for ignoring road signs giving an order. Were they to cause or suffer damage, they would also find their car insurance invalidated by their actions. This does not reflect well on our village – can we assume that it is down to those passing through the village and not to villagers?

Children’s Society Coffee Morning – Tomorrow, Saturday: Please support this fund raising event at the home of Elizabeth and Eddie Tinsley, Quincey Dale, Moor Lane, East Keswick. There will be the usual raffle, bring and buy stall and book stall from 10.30am to 12noon. For those that hold them, it is also an opportunity to bring along collection boxes for emptying. If you are unable to attend, please let Elizabeth have your box beforehand.

Church Services this Sunday, the first Sunday of Lent: Sunday Eucharist at St Mary Magdalene’s, Moor Lane, at 9.15am, celebrated by the Rev Peter Burrows, the Archdeacon of Leeds; Morning Worship at the Methodist Church, Main Street, at 10.30am, will be led by the Rev Graham Haslam from York and will include the Lenten Cross. It will be followed by refreshments in the Church Hall. Eucharist will also be celebrated at St Mary Magdalene’s every Wednesday at 11am during Lent, this week by the Rev Jeff King.
You will be warmly welcomed at any of these services.

The first ten minutes are set aside for residents to bring any issues to the council’s attention. Minutes of parish council meetings can be found on the village website at www.eastkeswick.org.
Ash Wednesday, February 25 – the Start of Lent: The Eucharist will be celebrated at St Mary Magdalene’s at 11am.
Recognising the Covenant relationships that are developing locally between Anglicans and Methodists, there will be a United Service for Ash Wednesday at 7.30pm at St James' Parish Church, Church Street, Wetherby. There will be joint Anglican/Methodist leadership of the service and it is open to all. Members of ‘Churches Together in Bardsey and East Keswick’ will be attending and transport can be organised if needed. Please contact Jack Cairns 01937 572645 or John Pentith 01937 574965 to offer/request transport or for further information.

John Hartley: Further to last week’s item, which was written in anticipation of the event, I can add that the service of thanksgiving for John’s life was graced by the presence of two members his former regiment, based at Catterick. His son, Jeremy, writes ‘If there are annals of village history, perhaps the day will be remembered as, among very many other things, the day the Gurkhas came to East Keswick.’ A fitting tribute, surely, to an amazing life.

East Keswick Village News
East Keswick - Judith Pentith 01937 574965

John Hartley: The funeral was held on Wednesday of John Hartley, former village post master. Following a family service at Harrogate crematorium, there was a service of thanksgiving at East Keswick Methodist Church. Among others, this was attended by the British Legion, where John had long been a member. Following the death of Nan fourteen months ago, John moved into residential care in Boroughbridge. A familiar figure in the village, he is already much missed. We extend our condolences to his family.

My apologies to those expecting a plug last week for the Bardsey Horticultural Society and WI’s monthly meetings. The copy left me in good time and was acknowledged by the Wetherby News staff but somehow disappeared into the ether never to be seen again! Here goes for the coming week.

Church Services this Sunday: Sunday Eucharist at St Mary Magdalene’s, Moor Lane, at 9.15am; Morning Worship at the Methodist Church, Main Street, at 10.30am will be led by Mrs Ruth Blakey from Church Fenton. It will followed by refreshments in the Church Hall. All will be made most welcome at either service.

Tuesday Coffee – it’s fun – it’s free – it’s friendly: East Keswick Methodist Church is serving tea, coffee and biscuits (and maybe cake!) on the other Tuesday mornings, not used by the Voluntary Care Group’s Seniors’ get-together, from 10.30am to 12noon. There is no charge and you can sit and drink coffee and chat for as long as you like. There is an opportunity for you to meet one of the leadership team at the Church. This Tuesday, February 17, Steve (the Rev Steve Barlow) and Trevor (Rev Trev) will be there so, if anyone would like a word with one of them, do drop in. Everyone is welcome – you do not have to be a ‘senior’!
Help Needed – 1: Can you spare two hours every five weeks? The Meals on Wheels service, which is run by the WRVS, needs some new volunteers to deliver meals to Collingham, Bardsey, East Keswick and Harewood. If you are able to help deliver lunches to local housebound villagers on a Tuesday or a Friday, please contact Gaynor Anning on 01937 572890.

East Keswick Parish Council: Any resident planning to attend this month’s meeting of the parish council is reminded that it will take place one week later than normal, on Tuesday, February 24 at 7.30pm.

Help Wanted – 2: East Keswick Toddler Group needs someone to serve tea, coffee, juice and biscuits to parents, carers and toddlers on a Thursday morning between 9.45am and 11.30am (term time only). A ‘thank you’ of £10 will be made for each session. If you are interested, please contact any of the following: Angela Syson 01937 579231, Barbara Trantor 01937 573701 or Heather Douglas 01937 572678.

East Keswick Flower Club: There are some vacancies in the Flower Club and they would welcome anyone interested in joining. If you like flowers and good company, then this could be for you. It isn’t necessary for you to be able to arrange flowers but you could always learn if you wanted to. Their next meeting is on Thursday, February 19, when Vanessa Wellock demonstrates ‘Design with a Difference’. So come to East Keswick Village Hall at 1.30pm as a visitor and see if you like it!

East Keswick Local History Group – Buildings Day School: This spring they will be looking at some of the building styles which contribute to the traditional character of the village. The Yorkshire Vernacular Buildings Study Group plans to lead talks, village walks and instruction in recording buildings, on Sunday, April 26. They will be based at the village hall and a ploughman’s lunch will be provided for participants. Before then they would like to collect information relating to our pre 1900 properties and particularly those older than about 1860. If you have the deeds to your property or any stories about its early history they would like to hear from you. For further information and/or a booking form, email localhistorygroup@eastkeswick.org.uk or telephone Liz Parr on 01937 572867.

East Keswick Village Gala: A number of volunteers have stepped forward to form a committee to organise a village gala this summer. While arrangements are at an early stage a provisional date has been proposed. Please put Saturday 13 June in your diaries – if it changes, I’ll let you know.

Climate Change Initiatives: The Government acknowledges that the debate on climate change is over. Scientists are in agreement that it is happening – and faster than had been expected. Forecasts of changes which were predicted in 80 years time may happen within the next 15 – 20 years. 50% of all carbon emissions reductions need to come from domestic households and the rest from commercial and industrial use. As part of the Transition Towns Initiative (www.transitiontowns.org) Wetherby and its neighbouring parishes in the Wetherby and Harewood wards are encouraged to become more resilient to the future adverse effects of Climate Change and Peak Oil through developing local initiatives. An Action Group is being set up for the Wetherby and Harewood wards and anyone interested in joining would be welcome. Please contact Janet Thornton (East Keswick Parish Council) at janet.thornton@btopenworld.com or 01937 572837 or David Gluck (Aberford Parish Council) at David.Gluck@ecotec.com for more information.

Church Services this Sunday: Candlemass Eucharist at St Mary Magdalene’s, Moor Lane, at 9.15am; Morning Worship at the Methodist Church, Main Street, at 10.30am, will be led by the Rev Trevor Dixon. It will followed by refreshments in the Church Hall. All will be made most welcome at either service.

Ladies Desperately Seeking Men!: Bardsey and East Keswick Ecumenical Choir, formed in 1990, is urgently in need of men. Current membership is six sopranos, four contraltos, two tenors and one bass (who is lonely!). This sociable group performs locally as required and, whilst appealing for men, ladies are not excluded. Men who sing, albeit it in the bath or shower, should identify themselves! There are NO auditions. Come to East Keswick Methodist Church, Main Street, on a Monday evening between 7.45pm and 9pm to find out what goes on. You are guaranteed a warm welcome – 70ºF! Be part of the 2009 programme: Wednesday April 8, 7.30pm at St Mary Magdalene’s, Moor Lane, East Keswick, ‘The Cross of Christ’ – Musical Devotion for Holy Week; July/August, venue to be arranged, a summer light music concert; Saturday, November 28, 7.30 p.m. at All Hallows’ Church, Bardsey, an open invitation to all singers to join in ‘Handel’s Messiah Part 1 + Hallelujah Chorus’; Monday, December 21, 7pm at East Keswick Methodist Church, The ‘Villages’ Community Carols. Contact Malcolm Bury on 01937 574136.

Seniors’ Coffee: Meets as usual on the first Tuesday in the Methodist Church Hall. Everyone is welcome to join them from 10.45am to 12noon on February 3. If you need a lift contact Voluntary Care on 01937 572227.

Gas Mains Works in Main Street: United Utilities report they are on schedule, having laid 150m of the 470m new pipe work required. The road works seem to be working quite smoothly and staff have been enabling a through route to operate during some evenings. Saturday working has been brought in on the last three weekends to keep progress to schedule. Bus services have also worked quite well, though, following comments received, the first shuttle bus of the day has been brought forward four minutes to 7.10am, enabling a connection to be kept with the X98 Leeds service at Collingham, as this departure runs earlier than subsequent ones. For full details of shuttle bus and school bus services and other road work information, please see the village website at www.eastkeswick.org.

East Keswick Village Hall: A very successful New Year’s Eve Party was enjoyed by 115 people, with a further ten, who could not be accommodated, being disappointed. The test of a good event is how many times you get asked, ”Are we going to do it next year?” and, at present, the answer is, “Yes”. Look out for the publicity in the autumn if you missed out on this last occasion and would like to come this year. David Wort extends many thanks to all the volunteers who made this year’s event possible.

Advance Notices: Retirement of Rev Raymond Pearson: On Friday, February 20 at 7.30pm. There will be a light supper in the village hall to provide an opportunity for the village to say thank you for the way Raymond has ministered to us over the last 14 years at our weekly services, at baptisms, weddings, funerals, house communion and by hospital visiting. A small presentation from the village will be made to Anne and Raymond at this event. Please contact Peter Anning on 01937 572890 if you are able to attend. There will be a parish farewell at noon on Sunday, February 22, this being the Sunday on which Raymond retires. This will take the form of a ‘Faith Lunch’, which Brenda Sanderson has offered to co-ordinate. Everyone from across the parish is encouraged to attend but it would be helpful if you could let Brenda know (01937 573352) if you plan to come and also what your contribution to the lunch might be.

East Keswick Village Hall - 5th Gourmet Dinner: This will be held on March 28 at a cost of £28 per head. Numbers are being limited to 100. Please book early to reserve your table of eight or ten or twelve. Smaller parties can be arranged in mixed groups. Special dietary arrangements can be made on request. Visitors are also welcome and their £3 entrance will include a glass of wine.
A Free Lunch?: Yes, there is such a thing! Food always brings people together – never more so than when you are an invited guest. Last Friday saw some sixty to seventy ‘seniors’ being entertained by the ladies of the East Keswick Women’s Institute. As always they put on an excellent spread, which was much appreciated by everyone. Thank you, ladies.

WI Jumble Sale: In view of the ongoing gas works, this annual event will probably be postponed until March. A new date will be advised when a decision has been made. Please hold on to your unwanted items until then – the income generated will help to provide next year’s lunch.

More food!: East Keswick Village Hall Annual Draw Night Supper was held last Saturday evening. The proceedings started with a concert given by the ‘Wetherby Light Music Singers’. With a varied selection of songs, their excellent performance was much appreciated. This was followed by a superb supper, laid on by the ladies of the committee, with wonderful sweets provided by the men. To round off the evening the Annual Draw was made and cheques should be with the lucky recipients this week.

Duke of Wellington Reopens: The Duke of Wellington Inn is undergoing some refurbishment and is due to reopen sometime in February. A manager will run the inn whilst the owners, Enterprise Inns, continue to advertise for tenants. The Inn has had a chequered past over recent years as a number of people took over the tenancy and failed, but in previous decades it had been a very different story, attracting a following from a wide swathe of North Leeds.

If not, you may yet be able to reserve a seat if you ring either Pat Stodart on 01937 572622 or Judy Roberts on 01937 573074 immediately. The deadline was last Monday, but you may be lucky. Lunch is 12.30 for 1pm in East Keswick Village Hall.

Tug-of-War: The annual New Years Day tug-of-war contest between The Old Star and the Duke of Wellington went ahead, despite the fact that the Duke was closed. The event has been a tradition in the village on New Year’s Day for many years, organised by Jimmy Wilson. The crowds were entertained to a number of tugs-of-war, as children and women competed, as well as the usual men’s events. Some, like Captain Chuncky, were in fancy dress and the event, as always, made the perfect curtain-raiser to the New Year. Over £500 was raised on the day making a total of £1,200+ for Candlelighters, a very worthy cause.

St Mary Magdalene’s: Some residents have been distressed by the amount of dog fouling around family graves in the churchyard. Dog owners are asked to consider whether there may be more suitable places for them to exercise their pets and are reminded to be vigilant and always clean up after them.

Gas Mains Works in Main Street: So far the contractor has successfully laid 130m of new plastic pipeline between Pool Bridge and the junction of Laurel Close. However, for safety reasons they have to temporarily postpone the rest of the project until the New Year. This is because worsening ground conditions have compromised the safety of on-site working for their staff. The site should be cleared and the bus lay-by re-opened by today, Friday. To guarantee safety for their engineers once work re-starts, they have applied to the local highway authority for a full road closure for a period of up to five weeks. We are assured that access to residents will be maintained. The contractor is currently in talks with the local bus company about arrangements for local services and we will be contacted nearer the time to explain what is happening. For any questions or concerns please contact their customer services team on 0845 6340521 or your Customer Liaison Officer Amanda White on 07825 539156. East Keswick - Judith Pentith 01937 574965

End of an Era: Tomorrow, Saturday, sees the last milk delivery by Dick and Elizabeth Ward. For some thirty years or more, come rain, hail or shine, they have delivered the doorstep ‘pinta’ to houses throughout the village and beyond. I well remember the day we moved in – the following morning, much to our surprise, a pint of milk was on the doorstep. How did they know? Generous to a fault, they regularly donated supplies to various village fund raising events and Elizabeth somehow found the time to fit in some baking for the cause of the moment. Not only have they provided the delivery service, unrivalled in its reliability, but they have also been the eyes and ears of the village during that time of day when very few of us are up and about. Ever alert, on several occasions they have spotted something untoward and taken the necessary action, be it contacting the police or rousing the householder. They will be a very hard act to follow. Always cheerful and friendly, we may actually see more of them, out and about, as they keep more civilised hours, albeit there is a long list of jobs to be done! We thank them both and wish them a long and happy retirement.

Good Neighbours: It’s that time of year – we all have plenty of garden rubbish to dispose of but is a bonfire the best solution? This can cause inconvenience for neighbours who may be trying to dry the washing, hold a barbecue or even children playing in their garden, in those all-too-brief sunny spells. It is most unpleasant to be on the receiving end of somebody else’s smoke and ash. Now that we all have Leeds City Council’s brown bins, which will accommodate most garden waste, there should be no need to inflame your rubbish or your neighbours. If you have not yet received a brown bin, and have not had any success by telephoning LCC yourself, then the Clerk to the Parish Council, June Gallant, is willing to pass on your details to the appropriate person. She can be contacted on 01937 573365 or june.gallant@virgin.net

Frank Wilberforce Thompson: The funeral of Frank Thompson, aged 96, took place on Monday, August 4, a bright and sunny day. A service of thanksgiving, which was held in the Methodist Church and led by the Lay Pastor, Heather Shipman, was attended by a great many people; such was the regard in which Frank was held. He and his wife, Margaret, had lived in both Bardsey and East Keswick and have so many friends and relatives in the area. Frank became afflicted by Alzheimer’s disease and spent his last months in the Methodist Home at Harrogate, where he died on July 28. Frank qualified in agriculture in Canada and spent 17 years working in Ghana. He served for a number of years on Bardsey Parish Council, latterly as Chairman. A devout Christian, he joined the Methodist Church at East Keswick in 1966, where he held just about every office: he was Senior Steward, Church Treasurer, Church Secretary, Property Secretary and a Pastoral Visitor, also serving as a Circuit Steward in the Tadcaster Circuit. He was a member of the Centenary Fund Raising Committee and the 21st Century Church Development Group, which coordinated major redevelopment of the premises in 2003, at he age of 91. In addition, he was a founder member of the Bardsey and East Keswick ecumenical committee. A much loved husband, father and grandfather, he is already much missed by the congregation.

Bardsey Fest, August 1- 3: If you haven’t obtained your tickets for the various events yet, it is not too late to call at the Bingley Arms between 6.30pm and 8pm this evening, Friday, where they will be on sale. There is something for everyone – do have a look in the souvenir programme which has been distributed to every household in the village.

Scarecrow Walk: Although not mentioned in the programme (at least I can’t see it!), on Wednesday, July 30, you are invited to meet at Bardsey Village Hall at 7pm for an organized walk around all the scarecrows that will have been placed in gardens (will there be any in East Keswick?) for the Fest Weekend. This might have more appeal for families than our Parish Walk – whatever your preference, there is no excuse for not getting out in the fresh air that evening!

Strawberry Tea: The Voluntary Care Team did themselves proud on Tuesday of last week, the hottest day of the year so far, when they put on the annual Strawberry Tea for senior residents of the village. Word had got out and the hall was packed, with everyone tucking into a delicious spread of strawberries with cream, scones and jam. It provided a good excuse to catch up with friends and all the latest gossip! A big ‘thank you’ to all involved.

Annual Gourmet Dinner: There must be something about good food: last Saturday saw some 100 villagers, friends and relations come together to enjoy a superb meal, as always. Thanks must go, not only to the organizers, whose meticulous planning ensured everything went smoothly, but also to the chefs for their wonderful food (the best yet?) and the efficient team of waiters, made up of the oft maligned village youngsters and their friends. While helping to raise funds for the ongoing development of the village hall, this is one event that needs no arm twisting to support. If you missed out this year, do look out in good time for the next one.

Post Office: Although there are no immediate plans to close our post office, we are all still being encouraged to use it as much as possible. The next review will be after the May elections and so we all need keep up the number of transactions in order to demonstrate its importance to our community. If we lose the post office, there is a good chance that the West End Stores will no longer be viable, which would be another major blow to village life. A large number of concerned residents, from East Keswick and neighbouring villages, have signed a petition to keep the post office open. If you have not already done so, it is not too late to add your signature. Remember – USE IT OR LOSE IT.

Refreshments will be provided. Bring your friends and your ideas! We need you to suggest what activities you would like at Youth Group and to let us know how you would like to use the Youth Room.
We are fortunate to be one of relatively few villages in the Leeds City Council area to have had the benefit of Youth Service personnel to run a youth group for us over the last couple of years. Unfortunately, personnel have been changing quite regularly, which has led to a lack of continuity. However, we now have Kath and Nicola – an experienced team – who are willing to provide YOU with an opportunity to make new friends in the village and take part in some fun and challenging activities – if you want.
Recently there as been little interest shown in the Youth Group. Have you tried it before and not liked it? Why not come along and have YOUR say?
Advance Notice: You don’t want this opportunity? Other villages are crying out for youth provision. We will have NO youth group if no interest is shown on April 14. This is your last chance. If you are unable to attend and would like your voice to be heard, then contact Janet Thornton on 01937 572837.

East Keswick - Judith Pentith 01937 574965:
Spring: It is now officially Spring and, after the earliest Easter for 95 years, complete with the snow more traditionally associated with Christmas than Easter, we move into British Summer Time at 2 am on Sunday. Do remember to put your clocks FORWARD one hour.
Church Services this Sunday: Sunday Eucharist at St. Mary Magdalene’s, Moor Lane, at 9.15 am.
Morning Worship at the Methodist Church, Main Street, at 10.30 am will be led by Rev. Gary Ridley from Boston Spa, in what will probably be his last service at East Keswick before he moves to Cumbria in the summer. The service will be followed by refreshments in the church hall. All will be made most welcome at either service.

East Keswick Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association: Will also meet on Tuesday, April 1. This will be an early dinner at Tom, Dick and Harry’s on the Thorpe Arch Trading Estate. To book your place, telephone Eileen Gilchrist on 01423 861956, by this weekend at the latest.

Help Needed: Two calls for help this week – one short term, the other a rather longer commitment. Firstly, the National Children’s Home, house-to-house collection in Bardsey and East Keswick will take place from Saturday, April 12 to Saturday, April 19. An annual collection has taken place in both villages for over fifty years. NCH is an excellent and successful charity, working with needy and abused children throughout the UK. Please support this event and welcome voluntary collectors who knock on your door. This year there is an urgent need for new collectors. If you can spare an hour to help these children please ring Pat Stodart on 01937 572622 for East Keswick or Anne Ashworth on 01937 573560 for Bardsey.
Secondly, can you help out at the local cub scout pack? They are looking for an assistant cub scout leader to help the cub scoutleader and three parent helpers to run cub scouts on a Monday evening between 7 pm. and 8.30 pm. There are currently 30 cub scouts – and a waiting list. This is a most worthwhile opportunity to put something back into the community. If you can spare a couple of hours a week and would like to find out more, please ring Ashley Cullingworth, the leader of the 1st Bardsey Cub Scouts, on 07984660236.

Churches Together in Bardsey and East Keswick: The second of their Lent visits, this time to the Roman Catholic Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Bardsey, took place last week. The priest explained the significance of the fourteen Stations of the Cross and illustrated them with slides of The Way of the Cross, in Jerusalem, taken on several pilgrimages which he has made. This proved very interesting and informative and provided an incentive to go on a pilgrimage, to those who have not already been.
The third and final Lent visit is to Ripon Cathedral on Thursday, March 6. The tour of this fine cathedral, part of which originates from the 7th century, will be conducted by Canon Keith Punshon and will last for about an hour. Meet at the main entrance at 6.30pm for the conducted tour or at 5.30p. if you wish to attend Choral Evensong before the tour.
Anyone needing help with transport or able to offer lifts is asked to contact Jack Cairns 01937 572645, Jean Heeley 01937 573712 or John/Judith Pentith 01937 574965.

Women’s World Day of Prayer: This ecumenical service is to be held in the Parish Church of All Hallows in Bardsey on Friday, March 7 at 2pm. The theme this year is “God’s Wisdom Provides New Understanding” and the service has been prepared by the Christian Women of Guyana. All are welcome.
Race Night: East Keswick Snooker Club is holding a “Race Night” on Friday, March 7 at 7.30pm in the Old Star, East Keswick – a fun packed evening for those who “like a flutter”. A good turn out is expected, so get there early!
Bardsey Horticultural Society: A garden in a churchyard? By careful selection and not inconsiderable skill over many years, Roger Brook has encouraged a neglected village churchyard into a well known but unusual garden at Bolton Percy in the Vale of York. At the meeting on Friday, March 7 at 7.45pm in Bardsey Village Hall, Roger will explain how and why this came about, including his technique for turning weeds and brambles into a natural haven for wildlife and plants. It is particularly beautiful in late spring to early summer when full of flowering bulbs and other herbaceous delights. Non members welcome for a £1 charge.
New Venture: Pantomime: There is a lovely new stage at the village hall – it seems a shame not to put it to good use! If there is any enthusiasm for it, it might be fun to put on a village panto next Christmas. Anyone interested in taking part, please contact Brian Dower on 01937 572149 or Janet Thornton on 01937 572837.

All will be made most welcome at either service.
Churches Together in Bardsey and East Keswick: The first of their Lent visits took place last week. Some 25 members of the churches in East Keswick and Bardsey visited the Greek Orthodox Church in Harehills and spent a fascinating evening being taken around the former Methodist chapel by the priest and his chanter. They explained how their festivals and ceremonies differed from ours - not a lot considering the churches split in the 11th century! They displayed the elaborate gold and silverware, an ornate Bible on the altar, the gold salver & chalice and described their communion rituals. The church is decorated with numerous beautifully painted icons, donated by members of the congregation, often in memory of a family member, and they described the part they play in worship. There was plenty of time to ask questions over refreshments. It was a most friendly and informative time. Thanks go to the Methodist Lay Pastor, Heather Shipman, for organising it.

With your February village newsletter, you will have received an envelope containing, among other things, a questionnaire entitled “Village Survey”. If you have not already done so, please complete and return it as soon as possible. The police accept that all communities are different and it is only when they are aware of OUR needs that they can start to address them. You are also reminded to take up the offer of a free home security survey and don’t forget to use the ultraviolet pen, provided by the Wetherby & District Crime Prevention Panel, not only to mark items from inside your home but also those expensive items of gardening equipment, which may be kept in a shed or garage. If you wish to discuss any issues or to arrange that survey, do call our neighbourhood PCSO, Louise Lodge, on 0113 2855375.

Their aim is to provide a relaxed atmosphere where friends can meet and enjoy luncheon each month with a light-hearted speaker to round off the afternoon. The club is non-profit-making and any surplus money at the end of the year is donated to local, rather than national, charities, nominated by members. Annual membership is £15 and members may take a guest to any luncheon by prior arrangement. They have had excellent renewal take-up at the end of their first year, but they have a few places left in their expanded membership quota, so, if you are interested in joining them, please phone either Janita Dedicoat on 01937 573923 or Pat Bradford on 01937 573582 for further details. Their next meeting is this Wednesday, February 13.

Neighbourhood Watch Report: The police have asked co-ordinators to draw to your attention the recent spate of thefts and attempted thefts from cars in both East Keswick and Collingham. Sat Navs, CD players and tools have been taken from cars parked in driveways. Police advice is that, wherever possible, cars should be parked in garages and, where this is not possible, valuables should not be left in a car when it is parked. When removing a Sat Nav and its cradle from a vehicle, care should be taken to clear the windscreen of the sucker ring – it is a dead give-away.

East Keswick - Judith Pentith 01937 574965

A Happy Christmas to Everyone: Celebrations got off to a good start last week when the East Keswick Local History Group welcomed mummers back to the village. They regularly entertained villagers up to the 1930s, when they travelled around the streets, and it was good to see the tradition revived. Certain prominent villagers will never be treated with their previous deference in future!
Monday saw the first of the church services when villagers joined the Bardsey and East Keswick Ecumenical Choir in the Methodist Church to sing their favourite Christmas carols.

Church Services this Sunday, the Fourth Sunday in Advent:
Sunday Eucharist at St Mary Magdalene’s, Moor Lane, at 9.15am;
Morning Worship at the Methodist Church, Main Street, at 10.30am, will be a service of Lessons and Carols. The preacher will be the Minister, Rev Steve Barlow and the service will followed by refreshments in the Church Hall.
There will be a Villages Carol Celebration at 4pm at St Mary Magdalene’s.

Christmas Eve Services: St Mary Magdalene’s at 3.30pm – Carols and Crib Service;
The Methodist Church at 6pm – A family Service of Light “Follow the Star”, led by the Lay Pastor Mrs Heather Shipman; the offertory will be shared between Martin House, Candlelighters and Emmaus Leeds. The service will be followed by refreshments in the Church Hall;
The Methodist Church at 11.15pm – Service of Holy Communion led by the Minister, Rev Steve Barlow;
St Mary Magdalene’s at 11.30pm – Carols and the Midnight Eucharist of Christmas.

Christmas Day: The Eucharist at St Mary Magdalene’s at 9.15am.
Do celebrate the birth of Jesus at any of these services. All will be made most welcome.

Nan Hartley: The funeral of Nan Hartley took place on Monday, on a crisp and sunny afternoon. The service of thanksgiving, which was held in the Methodist Church, was attended by so many people that there was standing room only; such was the regard in which she was held. Her grandchildren read appropriate poems and her sons shared memories of their childhood. The Minister, Rev Steve Barlow, spoke of her enormous contribution to village life, she wrote this column for seven to eight years and also ran the village Post Office, was an enthusiastic gardener, willing to share the results of her endeavours with others, and a founder member of the indoor bowling club. Always a cheerful face, she will be much missed around the village.

Final figures are not available yet but, suffice it to say, large numbers of visitors quenched their thirsts with a choice of over twenty beers and ciders, suitably fortified by generous ploughman’s lunches or local pork pies and mushy peas and waited on by the team of tireless kitchen staff. Various musical groups kept everyone entertained throughout the day, adding to the relaxed atmosphere. Evening numbers may have been down due to a certain rugby match but the afternoon attendance certainly made up for it. Thanks go to all who gave their support in any way.
