A HAPPY New Year to you all.

What a start to the year with all the snow. I was snowed up for over a week. However, it has all gone and I took the opportunity to do some walking. Down to Chain Lane and into Eastfields. There are no houses on Eastfield which is the main road leading to all the other roads. There are three roads - Farndale, Garsdale and Widdale, all the others are Drives, Mounts, Rises, Closes, Avenues, Groves and Ways. All named after the Yorkshire Dales and it took me some time to find all the dales on the North Yorkshire map. The houses were built in the 1970s and are easy to walk round. Bilsdale Grove backs onto Short Hill playing field, a very large expanse of grass which I never knew about. You can walk through this field and come on out on Park Lane (which I explored some time ago). The Forest School is situated on Park Lane and from the roundabout you return to Chain Lane.

Community Centre - The Centre on Chain Lane has a full programme.

Roads - My notes on the names of the new roads off Halfpenny Lane resulted in a letter from Joyce Watmough regarding the fact there is no mention of the original owner of the site, namely Batchelor.

I, too, obtained my plants from their greenhouses especially tomato plants for my greenhouse. I said in my report that the original road which led to the nurseries still has two houses on the left hand side numbered one and two, it would be a nice idea to call this Batchelor Way as Joyce suggests.

Also, there is a walkway round the rear of the houses which I believe leads on to Brearly Flat Lane and connects to Water Lane.

Town Windows - Last Wednesday, I took our youngest grandson, Oliver aged nine to see the market. He is on holiday with his parents who now reside in Lanzarote and they were spending a few days visiting friends.

As well as the market, I also had with me a copy of the ‘Town Windows’ leaflet which I obtained from the Tourist Information Centre. Oliver wanted to walk to see them in chronological order but I said we would be going backwards and forwards so we started on Gracious Street (Ginger Lacey) and then to Briggate (Guy Fawkes). On to Castlegate - three windows (King John, a window cleaner and Mother Shipton) then back to Blind Jack’s in the market and a few folks following us. Lastly down Kirkgate and just over the railway line with a double window depicting the Civil War and finally back on to the High Street opposite the bus station to see ‘The Zoo’ - a good 45 minutes walk.

Oliver has taken the leaflet back to Lanzarote to show his school pals there.

I have to applaud all the artists for a wonderful display of some of the interesting happenings in Knaresborough.
