On Wednesday, 18 March 2009 Ann Hemsworth delighted members of SI Harrogate with her talk, “The Life & Times of Beatrix Potter”, which revealed the extraordinary woman behind those endearing characters and stories we know and love.
Many of the audience had enjoyed the recent film, Beatrix Potter, but Ann Hemsworth’s enthusiasm for and knowledge of her subject presented many more surprising details and tales of Beatrix’s personal and professional life to keep us enthralled.
Ann exposed the life of Beatrix Potter as a bright but lonely child developing into an energetic and strong-minded woman with insights and aspirations way ahead of her time. Beatrix’s ambitions were broad and many: naturalist; conservationist; landowner; sheep farmer; financially astute; socially responsible; and Ann’s talk gave us to wonder, given less discrimination and the greater opportunities of today, where Beatrix’s great intellect and passions may have lead – and, without doubt, we would wish to recruit her as a Soroptimist.
