A UNIQUE day of workshops and seminars with leading crime writers and experts in the field of crime will be on offer as part of the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival.
The festival’s ‘Creative Thursday’ event is now in its fourth year and once again features a wealth of exciting crime related events.
Run in partnership with Leeds Met University, the day will include workshops such as Writing Legalese, which looks at how to communicate the law and order point of view and is presented by crime author Martin Edwards. Real CSI – Turning the Facts into Fiction considers how to create an effective and realistic investigation in a novel without drowning in facts and procedure, with author Laura Wilson and CSI officer Andy Manns.
And, back by popular demand, author Zoë Sharp will be giving a hilarious self-defence class while looking at how you can translate violence onto the page.
As well as creative hints, there are also the technical considerations in writing and the technical and industry sessions, with Pillars of Hercules looking at creating a manageable structure, while, Audio Books - From Page to Ear gives a fascinating insight into how to adapt and abridge novels for the spoken word.
A new introduction to Creative Thursday this year will be the ‘Dragons’ Pen’ - a chance for aspiring authors to pitch their ideas for a crime novel to some of the top industry professionals who have given a kickstart to many authors’ careers.
Dragons’ Pen is open to anyone attending Creative Thursday workshop. All they have to do is present their book in two minutes to the panel, then wait for the feedback. On the panel are Jane Gregory of Gregory and Company, Philip Patterson of Marjac Scripts, Selina Walker from Transworld and David Shelley from Little, Brown.
Creative Thursday costs £80 for the day, including lunch. Places are limited so book now on 01423 562 303.
